For her first ever Met Gala, Iris Law was not taking any prisoners. Wearing a barely-there feathered Moschino gown that put the spotlight on her abs, the 21-year-old model and Dior Beauty UK make-up ambassador also had an ice-cool beauty look to match. Working with fellow Dior make-up ambassador, Sam Visser, the pair drew upon “the colours that flowed through the dress”, accentuating Iris’s eyes and skin to create a gilded effect that closely matched the cool tones of her look.
The custom gradient halter dress, with cutout bodice and lace-encased plumes, came care of Jeremy Scott at Moschino, who says he “burst into tears when [he] saw [Iris] in the dress, because she looked so beautiful and it came alive. It’s a special dress for me because it comes from my own archive,” the designer added.
Vogue caught up with Iris and her team as she got ready.
“The make-up is inspired by the colours of the dress,” explains Visser. “It’s like ice: blue and lilac tones, and a very fluffy, elongated eyelash paired with gorgeous, glowing skin. We really wanted to emulate the gilded theme throughout the dress and into the face.”
“What made me like this eye make-up so much are the other tones, which you might not initially notice,” adds Law. “There are blues, taupes and lilac – that’s what made it so interesting to me.” Visser used Dior’s Diorshow Mono Colour Couture in 240 Denim to create the look.
Law says: “Mei [@Nailsbymei] did my nails, which was iconic because I’m obsessed with her! I literally sent a message to my group chat saying ‘I’m with a legend right now’. My nails are exactly the same colour as my eyeshadow, but they’re 3D and emulate the shape of the feathers on my dress.”
The key product in Law’s evening clutch? “A Dior Lip Contour (in 060 Premiere), which we used on the lip to line and fill it in,” says Visser. “It’s a brown nude, and we applied the dark brown Lip Maximiser gloss (020) on top to add a sheer, deep detail which goes with the highlighter effect on the rest of the body.”
“On Iris’s skin, we used the Dior Backstage Universal Glow on cheeks, down the nose and on her Cupid’s bow,” says Visser. “It gives a very punchy glow – and because we wanted every part of the skin to be super glowy, we also used it all over the body.”
“When I was thinking about the dress for Iris, I actually went back through my own archives,” says Jeremy Scott. “There was a dress that I had created using feathers, that I had appliquéd lace on top of, back in 2002 – that was my starting point. I had a couple of examples of the feathers and I wanted to explore this technique that I thought was very couture. I wanted to expand upon it, and I just started to create this idea of these feathers moulding her body, cutting out her midsection and then wrapping around her neck, and ending in a beautiful chiffon ombré of all the feathers and mixed lace.”
“I always go on a run before an event because it makes me look glowy,” Iris says. “I prioritise that one hour of training instead of getting a facial, because it not only gets you a good glow, but it also gets rid of water retention.”
Visser adds: “We played with different make-up looks in a test run the day before and at the very end, we tried one last thing and it was the moment – we both felt it!” Law agrees: “The room was so zen too. We had candles burning and everyone who walked in was like, ‘Woah, this room is so calm compared to some others!’ It was super chill.”
