All the New York Fashion Week Beauty Products You Can Buy Now (VOGUE)

p

The return of New York Fashion Week is wrapping this week in a beautiful bow, and for those looking to grab a piece of the action, consider its beauty. Some of the rare items that can be shopped straight from the runway are the products (think industry-favorite skin care, user-friendly makeup, and manicure gloves that replicate designer dreams) responsible for the season’s above-the-neck—and below the wrist—polish.

Stretching from the heart of Manhattan to the neighborhoods of Brooklyn, designer catwalks showcased lived-in, livable looks that—thanks to backstage breakdowns—can be accomplished from home with the right tools and the confidence that comes with knowing that in beauty, there are no rules. Experiment, explore, and feel the experience with the help of industry pros and the brands they really use when it’s time to show the world what’s next.

Below, a few of our favorite moments to consider now, while there’s plenty of time to play:

The ultra-chromatic liner at Theophilio’s Air Jamaica show felt electric for a reason: “We wanted to reflect the colorful nature of the Caribbean and pay homage to our love of vibrancy,” says makeup artist Mimi Quiquine. To push your artistic side, consider MAC’s best-selling pigments, which can be applied with a wet brush or dusted over your existing liner (for grip!) to pump up the volume.

For Jason Wu’s show, the designer was, at long last, able to use his new (clean!) makeup collection to complement his fashion. Makeup artist Diane Kendal applied the line’s lip masks for various purposes: “We finished the look with a lip mask on the deep lips, and onto the lids that were garnished with color,” she shares.

The mirror-finish sheen on models’ skin at Proenza Schouler was completely intentional. “I love to saturate, full saturation,” Tata Harper shared backstage of misting her Hydrating Floral Essence onto faces. Its hyaluronic acid instantly plumps skin. Then, her eponymous brand’s Resurfacing Serum delivered a “micro-dosing of acids” for micro-exfoliation that’s designed to be safe for consistent use. “If you’re gonna use the products every day, you just want glow. You want healthy cell turnover, but you don’t want it to be too much.”

First thing in the morning at Manhattan’s infamous Boom Boom Room, guests received show information printed on a pair of white gloves for Maisie Wilen’s show. On the runway, models sported various lengths of the look as a nod to ’80s glam. Consider a $20 pair of ManiGlovz to replicate the look—they’re made with UV-protective fabric for gel manicures— and look surprisingly appropriate for everything else.

“I was looking to create a balance of innocence and sophistication with this makeup, a ‘debutant’ in other words,” says makeup artist Kabuki of Moschino’s highly fringed catwalk gazes. “Two coats of mascara top and bottom on curled lashes have demi-winged faux lashes to up the doe-eyed effect.”

Industry-favorite hairstylist Jawara Wauchope keyed Brandon Maxwell’s NYFW runway evolution with braids meant to evoke a “post-beach effortless, natural hair look” with specific steps to achieve it. Dyson’s new smoothing nozzle attaches to the brand’s Supersonic hairdryer to blow hair straight before smoothing hair with Dyson’s Corrale hair straightener. “Begin to braid the hair in cornrows,” he shares of the technique that can then be finished with a blast of air through the flyaway attachment “to be sure the final look is sleek and smooth.”

Always a bit of a showman, Christian Cowan’s feathery, flashy runway was given a chill balance with the “’90s nudes” that makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench applied to lips. “The collection is super bright; we wanted something to complement and to tie it all together,” says Ffrench. “It’s all quite glam, we want her to feel elevated and gorgeous—as she should.”

Nail artist Mei Kawajiri (@nailsbymei) has become fashion’s favorite manicurist, known for pushing the boundaries with custom sets that take hours to make. For Sandy Liang’s runway, Kawajiri leaned on her new collab with ManiMe (which 3-D prints vegan stick-on gels) to speed up the process by placing decals over the brand’s signature base coat shade. “We only used the black flower,” Kawajiri tells me. “And the rest of the fingers, just the pink base coat.”

For Eckhaus Latta’s artist-focused crowd of cools, hairstylist Tamara McNaughton gave “a slight nod to ’80s beauty” with slick, pushed-back “kind of windswept, aerodynamic” hair for all models of all genders. It was meant to be relaxed and “not make everything so heavy-handed,” so a great option for days when one can’t be bothered. The retexturing gel is a “pretty serious” harder hold, while the styling cream delivers a softer wet look.

“The Rodarte spring 2022 makeup is fresh and minimal with a few artistic flourishes,” says makeup artist James Kaliardos, who keyed the show for NARS. Staged outdoors at Westbeth Artists Housing’s West Village courtyard, perfecting skin for direct sunlight—while still enhancing natural contours—was key. A bit of creamy concealer topped with a range of matte sheer cream blush (including the brand’s most famously blush-inducing shade, below) created high-profile cheekbones for all faces.

On the rooftop of Brooklyn Grange, Collina Strada opened the week with a colorful, glitter-flecked show that reflected the spirit of the rows of guests and models. Tinx was on the runway and Parsons students, like astrological visionary Maya Alzaben, were in the audience. The kickoff set the tone—sparkling, just like the glitter that dotted eyes and ears as far as the sunset could reach.
