At Versace, Wet Hair and Red Lips Offer a Cool Twist on Mermaid Beauty (VOGUE)

00028-Versace-RTW-SS2120(1)
Tonight in Milan, Versace brought a fantasy underwater dreamspace to life for its spring 2021 show. Described as a "utopian settlement on the seabed ruled by Medusa," there was aquatic blue lighting, sculptural sand relics, and a parade of bright, print-splashed, and crystal starfish-encrusted clothes. Speaking to the season's underwater theme—quite literally—was the sea of soaked strands. From Joan Smalls' raven lengths to Mica Arganaraz's shaggy brown curls, many of the models had their hair intricately shellacked along the forehead and down either side of the neck; sometimes with a set of barrettes and ends tucked underneath a chunky necklace to luxe, layered effect.   Furthering designer Donatella Versace's guiding "principles of empowerment, strength and beauty," were the neon-bright fuchsia lips worn by a few of the models including Precious...

Justin and Hailey Bieber Star in Drake and DJ Khaled’s Over-the-Top “Popstar” Music Video (Harper’s Bazaar)

Screen Shot 2020-09-14 at 1.15.25 PM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=7&v=3CxtK7-XtE0&feature=emb_title Both Justin and Hailey Bieber make appearances in the music video for Drake and DJ Khaled's newest song, "Popstar." In the visuals, Justin stands in for Drake, living the rapper's extravagant lifestyle. Hailey and the couple's puppy, Oscar, make cameos toward the video's end. Justin Bieber is channeling his inner Drake for "Popstar," the newest collab between the Toronto rapper and mega producer DJ Khaled. The satirical short film starts out with the song's creator, DJ Khaled, begging Drake to film a music video for their latest single. Drake, playing a hyperbolic version of himself, claims to be too busy to participate, leading him to call in a favor from his very famous friend Justin Bieber. Throughout the remainder of the visuals, Justin becomes Drake, donning fur coats,...

Byredo’s Debut Makeup Collection Colors Outside The Lines (ELLE)

screen-shot-2020-09-02-at-8-48-54-am-1599061782
How does one launch a makeup line in 2020—a year mired in mistakes, change, chaos, rule-breaking, and shape-shifting? If you're Swedish fragrance brand Byredo—you embrace it all. Founder & Creative Director Ben Gorham and innovative makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench imbued that spirit into the brand's first foray into cosmetics. It's a six-product launch that tosses out convention and re-conceptualizes cosmetics. BOHMAN+SJÖSTRAND/BYREDO Come October, and the products can live on your beauty shelf. But the idea for a Byredo makeup launch has been living in the minds of Gorham and Ffrench rent-free for about two years; they tell ELLE via Zoom. "We shared this outsider's perspective," Gorham says of enlisting Ffrench for the project. "Her creations were about pure expression—not referring to the norms...

It Was Only a Matter of Time Before PPE Went Luxe (VOGUE)

JBR0338-110-RAW_0064-02
Face masks have dramatically evolved throughout the pandemic. They began as a necessary, utilitarian item. But as they became part of our everyday lives, fashion brands also began reimagining how a face covering can look. Though they’re still essential and utilitarian at their core (at the most essential level, a mask should always safely and comfortably cover one’s mouth and nose), they’ve now become a form of accessory. You can now find a mask in virtually any sort of style, from tie-dyed to covered in sequins. With that in mind, it was only a matter of time before this fashion sentiment evolved to other forms of PPE, too. Case and point: Louis Vuitton announced this week that it will be releasing its own high-fashion...

The Symbolism of Kamala Harris’s Outfit at the Democratic National Convention (Harper’s Bazaar)

gettyimages-1228115182
Kamala Harris made history Wednesday night, officially accepting the Democratic party's vice presidential nomination. During the virtual Democratic National Convention, she gave a speech that introduced herself to the national stage; she spoke about her mother, being the child of immigrants, the legacy of Black politicians and activists who blazed a trail for her. Her clothes told part of her story, too. The senator from California wore a burgundy double-breasted blazer and trousers that she accessorized with a pearl necklace. The look was no great departure from the conservative fashions usually associated with the world of politics—pantsuits and pearls have long been part of the vernacular. But the details spoke volumes. White has become a popular color for women in politics in recent years,...

How HipDot Helped FacedByKareem Create His Dream Palette (Allure)

HipDot20x20FacedByKareem20campaign201
In the burgeoning era of influencer beauty collaborations, knowing who truly has a say in what products they put their name on can be a tightly held industry secret. But the new HipDot x FacedByKareem Palette is all about transparency and teamwork. In February, makeup artist Kareem Maliek Rogers, known as FacedByKareem to his 20,400 (and counting) Instagram followers, put together a proposal for a sunset-meets-neutral palette — down to the exact undertones, fonts, and shade names he wanted to include — and HipDot created it to a T. "I put the shade name, what it meant to me, the undertone, like, slightly red, slightly golden, neutral but still have like a little bit of coolness to it. I made it very specific in the email," Rogers...

If wearing face masks out in public will be a part of our standard operating procedure for the foreseeable future, we might as well do it in style. We've been matching our masks to our makeup and matching our masks to our looks. Several designers started making reusable masks early on the pandemic. Now Burberry has joined their ranks with the launch of its first-ever face mask collection. Burberry's masks are patterned in the brand's iconic Nova Check print and come in two different colorways: tan and light blue. Finding More Gray Hairs? You’re Not Alone (Harper’s Bazaar)

woman-with-grey-hair-blowing-across-her-face-royalty-free-image-1597686931
I found my first gray hair months before my 27th birthday—and minutes after watching Moonstruck. I’d chattered to my boyfriend about Cher’s salt-and-peppers curls as the 1987 movie played, saying how refreshing it was to see a woman with silver in her hair on a screen. However—spoilers for the decades-old movie ahead—I was stockstill when, partway through the film, the character decides to “take out the gray” during her pursuit of a younger man. I didn’t need to explain to my boyfriend, or anyone, how that felt to watch: Cher’s character was doing what was expected of her. And not an hour later, as I stood in front of my bathroom mirror examining the snow-white hair near the front of my head, I...
