If you were to close your eyes and imagine the picture-perfect holiday destination, chances are you’d be dreaming of Cabo San Lucas. Located on the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, it was only in the 1980s that it first opened an airport and started attracting affluent American tourists, who came here for its untouched white sands and year-round sunshine.
Fast-forward to today and it attracts over three million visitors a year, an increasing number of whom are seeking the utmost in luxury – a private, beachfront Cabo villa. According to the Los Cabos Tourism Board, there has been a 30% increase in luxury villa bookings over the past five years, no doubt influenced by the Hollywood set.
Some of Mexico’s most beautiful coastline is located in Cabo San Lucas, with standout beaches including Medano Beach (great for water sports), Chileno Beach and Santa Maria Beach (both great for snorkelling). Our favourite, though, is Playa del Amor, or Lover’s Beach, which, unsurprisingly, is very romantic and only reachable by boat.
Aside from its picturesque beaches, there’s plenty to explore within the town of Cabo San Lucas too, with its pretty cobblestone square of artisan shops that sell everything from artworks to textiles. Located just outside of town is Flora Farms, a working organic farm that specialises in farm-to-table cuisine, with a handful of different dining options on site. Another must-do is a mezcal tasting – it is the national tipple, after all. You can book one at most of the local restaurants and hotel bars. The food, of course, is gloriously authentic and traditional. It would be a crime if you didn’t try fish tacos and guacamole made à la table during any stay here.
And while you’re indeed spoilt for choice when it comes to five-star hotels, with a plethora dotted along the 9,000km coastline, why not do as the A-list do and stay in a luxury villa instead?
Cabo San Lucas’ Best Luxury Villa
The glamorous Villa Vegas Dave 3 is a particular favourite among the rich and famous, and it’s easy to see why. Recently named as the Cabo San Lucas 2024/25 Villa of the Year, this beautiful 13-bedroom property features panoramic views of the Sea of Cortez, with an infinity pool, swim-up bar, submerged sun loungers and fire pit for evening entertaining. Catering to up to 50 guests, it’s ideal for big group trips – from intergenerational family holidays to epic celebrations with friends.
Mealtimes are particularly special at Villa Vegas Dave 3, thanks to the three world-renowned private chefs who are on hand to cater to every occasion. Specialising in global cuisine, they can whip you up an authentic Mexican feast, Southern comfort food or even a sushi night. And with multiple different areas to dine in, including both indoor and outdoor options, no meal time has to be the same.
When you aren’t topping up your tan or taking a dip in the pool, then gym buffs can hit the private gym, which has state of the art equipment. There’s also a dedicated yoga floor with uninterrupted oceanfront views – an ideal place to practice your vinyasa flow as the sun rises. Soothe aching muscles with a massage in the private treatment room afterwards or sweat it out in the steam room.
For the full VIP experience, you can also make use of the 24/7 concierge, who is around to coordinate every aspect of your stay, from making restaurant reservations to chartering private yachts or even organising a whale-watching excursion or horse-back riding on the beach. What’s more, the villa also comes with four butlers, whose every wish is your command, genie-style. Just remember, you can’t use your wishes to prolong your stay, unfortunately.
Cabo San Lucas is an excellent destination to visit year-round, but if you can, be in town for its annual Day of the Dead festival in November. You won’t be disappointed, as everyone gets into the spirit (no pun intended) with vibrant decorations, costumes, food stalls and live music. Another highlight is whale-watching season, from mid-December to mid-April, when you might catch a glimpse of migrating grey whales – a truly unforgettable experience. Depending on your needs, you might also consider staying at sister property Villa Vegas Dave 2, or at one of Cabo’s other luxury villas, like Casa Fryzer or Villa La Datcha.
