Meet Javier Des Leon, the Body Behind the Body in Those Y/Project x Jean Paul Gaultier Body Morph Looks (VOGUE)

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky—arguably the world’s most stylish couple—were spotted in Barbados last weekend. A toned six-pack peeked out of Rocky’s buffalo-plaid flannel, stealing the spotlight. Except the taut torso wasn’t his but a printed long-sleeve top by Y/Project’s Glenn Martens made in collaboration with Jean Paul Gaultier, featuring a reimagined version of Gaultier’s famous body-illusion graphics of spring 1996. The body behind the body belongs to Spanish model and content creator Javier Des Leon. Yes, that’s all him, baby.

Des Leon began his career as a stylist, though, as he told me over Zoom from his flat in Madrid, he soon outgrew that role as he dedicated more of his time to social media. “I started building this character on Instagram,” he said, realizing his skills for modeling, art direction, and photography all converged in that space. The switch happened at 25; he’s now 31.

Des Leon’s virtual portfolio has helped him land fashion gigs; he’s created content for Palomo SpainMoschino, and Jean Paul Gaultier fragrances and modeled in editorials for the likes of Vogue Italia. He got a call from Y/Project late last year and flew to meet the team in Paris. “Glenn was interested in me, so they asked me to be a part of the next collection. I didn’t know what I would do or what the process would be like. They just told me I had to be nude and pose as a statue. It was a simple process, just working the lighting and trying to find the right pose.” Simple, sure, but Des Leon puts a considerable effort into looking the way he does. “It’s a lot, and it’s exhausting, feeling like you have to look a certain way to keep your audience,” he adds. “But I guess these moments make it worth it.”

Audience in Des Leon’s case means his Instagram community. His profile is a mix of fashion editorials, brand-partnership content, and provocative images, both personal and promotional of his other ventures. It’s a gallery of his point of view, which he describes as fashion meets sad boy meets eroticism. “There’s an intimacy too,” he says. “It’s erotic and porny but emotive and slightly dangerous. Definitely dangerous.”

There are parallels between how Des Leon approaches his content and what Martens did with his JPG collaboration. “You can play with cropping or showing some things and not others,” Des Leon says of his efforts to circumvent Instagram’s strict—and often absurd—nudity filters. Martens’s body-morph prints display a spectrum of nudity, from abstract torsos to graphic full-frontal, but the key is they are prints. If Des Leon posts an image of himself wearing his body—the Y/Project version—Instagram will leave the image alone, but if he posts a photo of his body, then the platform will likely take it down. This clever, playful way of using nakedness has appealed to his fans, and it’s likely what made the body-morph pieces—both the ’90s originals and these new iterations—so popular to begin with.

To answer the question on many minds, yes, Des Leon has an OnlyFans account. It’s an extension of his Instagram, only uncensored. “If everyone will be asking me for nudes for free, they should go there and pay for them,” he quips. Going forward, there are likely to be more requests along those lines because he’s working on a summer capsule with an underwear brand. He also dropped an EP, On Red, earlier this year.

So what does it feel like to watch your body walk down the runway and see it plastered all over tabloids on one of the most famous rappers in the world? “I’m just very proud to have been a part of this and grateful to Glenn and his team. He’s a genius, and I love the direction in which he’s leading fashion right now.”

When Des Leon arrived on Instagram, his type of content—fashion-y, editorialized erotica—was less commonplace, though it’s grown popular over the last few years. “It was dismissed at first, but it’s grown to be accepted,” he says. It’s true. A quick scroll down his follower list uncovers a who’s who of designers, editors, publicists, and others in the industry—many of them gay men—captivated by his singular brand of sexiness. “I’m fine with being vulnerable, both emotionally and physically, being in the nude, literally,” he says. “Why should I be ashamed of my body? I love fashion, and my body is also how I interact with it.”
