Dress for Y2K (SSENSE)

OKOK

Like The Jetsons or Oscar Niemeyer’s mid-century skyscrapers before it, Y2K style now represents a retro vision of the future. Two decades on from the year 2000, today’s designers have the space to reexamine the turn of the century style’s hallmarks: colorful, shiny plastic accessories; feathery and fuzzy textures that won’t be found in nature; icy cold space-age tones like silver, white, pink, and blue. What was Y2K? If you’d forgotten, it was the alarm and awe inspired by technology (and society) possibly crumbling because of a computer formatting issue. The accompanying Y2K aesthetic attempted to depict a new, unknown future, and as such the opportunity to reimagine the fashion rules was impossible to pass up, with styles ranging from letting it all hang out in spaghetti straps and low-rise cuts, to covering up in sweeping trenches and as much denim as the body can handle.

With that forward-thinking outlook, the style still has something new to offer. These selections will show you why Y2K fashion is more than just flared jeans (though there’s a place for that, too).

Y2K cardigan

Model wears Jacquemus cardigan.

Jacquemus understands that the more shrunken the shrug, the better. In the future, the sternum needs no protection.

Y2K bag

Featured In This Image: Diesel bag.

Tiny and shiny, this shoulder bag would make the perfect complement to a simple spaghetti-strap top and low-rise denim look.

Y2K hair clip

Featured In This Image: YVMIN hair clip.

Make Mariah circa 1999 proud by unleashing your inner butterfly in this sculptural clip. Hair crimping optional.

Y2K coat

Model wears LU’U DAN coat.

If your preferred take on Y2K cyber futurism is less Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century and more The Matrix, LỰU ĐẠN’s sweeping duster coat is ideal.

.

Y2K top

Model wears Miaou tank top.

A good going out top is a nonnegotiable. With plenty of exposed skin and an eye-catching print, Miaou’s corset top made in collaboration with Paloma Elsesser has all the key nighttime top elements.

Y2K dress

Model wears Danielle Guizio dress.

Danielle Guizio’s lilac dress is spaghetti-strap perfection. Be sure to pair with plenty of body shimmer for the full millennium look.

Bucket hat Y2K

Model wears Tanner Fletcher hat.

The contrast between the casual light-wash denim and the delicate silk tie makes this more than your average bucket hat. Wear with head-to-toe denim for Britney and Justin vibes.

Y2K sandals

Featured In This Image: Palm Angels sandals.

The early twenty-first century introduced many innovations, including a kitten heel on flip flops. Palm Angels gets the style just right with two-tone colorways and a rugged sole.

Y2K jeans

Model wears Diesel jeans.

Let Diesel take you back to a time when skinny jeans were but a figment of the imagination, when the dominant question was, “How much denim can we put on our body at once?” The limit does not exist.
