It doesn’t take a fashion expert to see that skin-bearing silhouettes are spiking this season. Following a fallow year (or three) where oversized, covered-up clothing reigned and comfort was king, it seems as though the fashion world has rebelled, taking scissors to their designs (not literally, as far as I’m aware), and slashing and slicing them with abandon.
Summer dresses, in particular, have been subject to this treatment, with cut-out styles appearing on the runways of designers such as Proenza Schouler, Nensi Dojaka and Nanushka. But, unlike the infamous “naked dress”, these skin-flashing pieces are, in many cases, totally wearable and undeniably polished. The joy of the cut-out dress lies in the conceal-and-reveal element. Think: a slither of under-boob, a flash of collarbone. It’s “sexy” dressing, but on our own terms.
Christopher Esber currently sits at the top of our shopping wish list: the brand’s cut-out dresses are in plentiful supply, and range from autumn-ready knitted iterations to Noughties-inspired colour-pop numbers. When it comes to the high street, meanwhile, & Other Stories is worth a look. The petrol-blue hue of this halter-neck dress is perfect for summer holidays – just style with gladiator sandals and a raffia bag. You also can’t go wrong with a black cut-out midi for both home and away, casual and dressier occasions. A perfectly playful spin on the classic LBD.
