Balmain’s men’s and women’s fall 2022 collection pays homage to the honesty and transparency necessary to form a collective arm against lies and aggression. According to longtime creative director Olivier Rousteing, the inspiration came directly from his response to “not-always-pleasurable experiences on social media.”
A direct reflection of current technology, the Parisian fashion house’s newest collection features a largely pale palette, with shades of whites, creams, light pastels, and soft denims representing the affirmative clout that follows transparency. Black with pops of neon and gold embellishments also adorn the garments, adding statement pieces to an otherwise neutral collection.
Unlikely pairings are seen throughout the pieces, with light fabrics such as lace used alongside metal and neoprene elements. An air of futurism is felt through elements of restraint, with protective wraps, shields and gilets symbolizing security and strength.
The collection is a contradiction within itself; feminine silhouettes play with masculine elements of design, delicate fabrics combine with structures corsets and bondage detailing. Still, both the mens and womenswear is versatile and bold, encapsulating the brands vision of creating a modern vision of society and technology, and our human reaction to it.
Addressing the current Russian invasion of Ukraine, Rousteing said, “While these runway offerings were not designed as a direct response to the recent horrific invasion of our neighbors [Ukraine]…as we watch the news, my team and I do keep in mind this collection’s message: united in solidarity, we can rely on the power of hope and truth to push back against hate, lies and aggression.”
