Ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to reintroduce you to jelly sneakers. If you’re keeping tabs on the never-ending resurgence of ’90s trends, it’s yet another polarizing movement poised for a major comeback this year. Those who grew up in that decade might recall days of running around on the playground in a squishy, see-through pair. But the playful shoe feels all grown up now, thanks to sleek variations that make for cool pairings with suits and spring dresses.
Jonathan Anderson showed us how it’s done best, sending models down the runway in draped dresses and translucent trainers for Loewe’s spring 2022 presentation. Some of those runway looks have trickled into the pages of Vogue; for our February cover story, Alex Harrington styled Hoyeon Jung in not one or two but three pairs of Loewe jelly sneakers.
Loewe isn’t the only runway designer making a case for the see-through trend. Whether it’s a PVC finish or transparent mesh layering, the translucent takeover continues with Maison Margiela’s crystal-clear rendition and Dior’s sheer-perfection sneakers. And of course, plenty of athletic brands—like Nike and Adidas—are also welcoming the return of the sheer sneaker.
Now’s the perfect time to start testing out all of those fun spring trends, beginning with one of the translucent trainers below.
