If Olivia Wilde’s January 2022 cover is any indication, fashion is embracing lingerie in many forms for the spring season ahead. Wilde’s black Michael Kors bra top wasn’t the only intimates item we saw out of spring’s ready-to-wear assortment; in fact, it was just the start.
Designers revealed undergarments in many ways, from subtle peeks to full-on seductive displays. There was Gucci’s star-studded, lingerie-filled line up which included everything from bustier slips, lace sets, and garters to, ahem, sex-toy jewelry. Don’t forget that Loewe paired airy pale blue blouses styled with nothing but high waist briefs. At Fendi, multiple models walked in lace triangle bralettes, be it under suiting or sultry black lace and mesh bodysuits. Meanwhile, JW Anderson’s dotted white sleeveless dresses coordinated white cotton undergarments. And for the girls at Miu Miu, not only did they stun in Miuccia Prada’s micro mini skirts, but showed off their abs in cupped bras as tops, styled like any other shirt you’d leave the house in; with a necklace, pair of sunglasses, and shoulder bag in tow.
For a few ideas on how to incorporate undergarments into your looks this spring and how to shop them, find a handful of styling tips and tricks straight from the Spring 2022 runways, below. Though all of this to say, how you interpret this “new sexy” is up to you to decide.
No Pants, No Problem!
The saying goes, no shirts, no shoes, no service. But what about no…pants? On the runways at Gucci, Loewe, and Sandy Liang, models walked barelegged, only in a pair of briefs—cute ones, we might add!—and footwear from the waist down. If there’s going to be a standalone underwear moment, then might as well make it underwear that deserves to be seen, like these ruffled eyelet, tulle, or pointelle-trimmed pairs.
Good Night-Wear
Lace-trimmed chemise tops and slip dresses were seen in ultra-wearable versions at Rodarte and Louis Vuitton, something you could wear to a cocktail party or paired with tailoring for date night. At Gucci, lacey undergarments gave retro Hollywood glamour.
Bra Tops in the Literal Sense
In addition to the soft knit bras and triangle bralettes, we’ve seen grace runways a handful of times in the past, and including Spring 2022, designers are also offering traditional cupped silhouettes this season. Bra tops take on their most literal form at Miu Miu and Michael Kors, paired with midi-length pencil skirts. Even Vogue’s January cover star, Olivia Wilde took to the trend.
Sheer Seduction
Barely-there slips and sheer lace ready-to-wear separates mean undergarments are on view for spring. Keep things coordinated for best effect, like Fendi’s all-black lace layering or JW Anderson’s all-white minimalist high waist briefs and bralette under a sheer angelic dress. After all, if you’re going to choose a meshy dress, you’ll want what’s underneath to look just as good.
