Velour is making a comeback, and Irina Shayk is helping spread that message. Yesterday, the Russian model was photographed walking down the streets of New York in a gray hoodiecrew-neck tank, and fitted joggers. The entire ensemble comes courtesy of SKIMS, Kim Kardashian West’s shapewear label that recently introduced a loungewear collection made of the plush knit—one that older millennials know all too well.

In the early 2000s, the velour tracksuit was the outfit of choice for celebs, society swans, and anyone who partied at Bungalow 8. Paired with a Von Dutch cap, bug-eye sunglasses, and a Starbucks cup, the style imbued ease, if indifference. It was a time when Instagram didn’t exist, when the Internet was accessed via dial-up, and when street style wasn’t really a thing. For most, comfort was key, and velour zip-ups and sweatpants from brands like Juicy Couture and Baby Phat offered that in spades.

Now, nearly two decades later (am I the only one who feels like a fossil?), velour is steadily creeping back into the fashion fold—but with a twist. The 2.0 version, as Shayk shows, is much more form fitting and comes in colors that are much less saccharine (bubblegum pink can kindly stay in the aughts).

To highlight this evolution further, Shayk accessorized her look with a Juste Un Clou bracelet by Cartier, and knee-high leather boots and a zebra-print shoulder bag from By Far. Read: No Von Dutch here.
