Whether you chalk it up to the ambiance or timely wine refills, there are few things in this life as memorable as an intimate and cozy meal. From fireplace romance to winter retreats, the following list represents our take on restaurants and eateries— housed in everything from a fire-lit chalet to a canopy of trees—where the comfort, romance, and feeling of home have been cranked up to almost-outrageous levels. Think roaring fireplaces, thick rugs, rich decoration, and heart-warming food. Dig in and prepare to get very comfortable indeed.

1) New York City: The Gallery at The Carlyle Hotel
COURTESY OF ROSEWOOD HOTELS

Drawing inspiration from the elegant surrounds of Istanbul’s Topkapi Palace, The Gallery, which occupies two levels of Rosewood Hotels’ iconic Madison Avenue establishment, was designed by the revered late Italian decorator Renzo Mongiardino. Full of life, brimming with eclectic design details and vibrating with his characteristic and theatrical flair, The Gallery is on the hit-list for elegant afternoon tea set amidst darkly-papered walls, pleated shades and richly embroidered kilims. Expect it’s finely-decorated china plates, cups, and bowls to be stacked high with foie gras, pate, sandwiches, Devonshire cream, steaming Assam and fragrant Lapsang. Enjoy all of the above nestled in a dimly-lit setting, seated in cushy velvet banquettes. You might be dining in the heartbeat of the hotel, but the vibe feels private. Trust us, it’s just what the Sultan ordered.

2) Santorini: Lycabettus
COURTESY

The ultimate restaurant with a view, Lycabettus sits on the edge of a cliff on sumptuous Santorini overlooking the wide reach of the surrounding sea. Ripe for romantic sunsets and heavy with adventurous Greek gastronomy, this dining must is arguably one of the world’s most spectacular and intimate balconies. This feast for the eyes (and your appetite) is cozy due to its secluded, private, and ‘end-of-the-Earth’ feel. It also has levels; grab a seat at the highly sought-after Sommelier’s Table to get the king of all views.

3) Jaffa: Don Camillo
AMIT GERON

From the masterminds behind cozy New York staples The Grill, Carbone and Sadelle’s, Major Food Group has teamed up with renowned Israeli Chef Roi Antebi to create Don Camillo, an ode to mid-century Italian-American cuisine, hidden within the walls of the Jaffa, a Luxury Collection Hotel.

The magic of Don Camillo begins on your journey there, witnessing a breathtaking sunset as the skies fade from dusky pinks to inky blacks over the waters of ancient Jaffa and modern Tel Aviv. Dine in a tree-filled, charming courtyard when it’s not too hot or cold, and then return for an even cozier vibe indoors, which resembles the personal library of a well-traveled antique collector. Sit down to traditional Italian dishes infused with local Israeli flavors, like the grilled calamari paired with eggplant and Tuscan chickpeas.

4) London: Clos Maggiore
COURTESY

Beneath an ever-changing canopy of fresh flowers, in the conservatory space of London’s Clos Maggiore, French classics are treated with modern joie de vivre. Combined with a roaring fire, a ceiling of bountiful cherry blossom, and a truly magnifique wine list, this upscale Covent Garden eatery has become something of a byword for romantic perfection. Should you find yourself in London, plan a night out at the theatre, followed by dinner here; thank us later, this promises to be one of the most romantic meals of your life.

5) Marrakech: Villa des Orangers
COURTESY

True to its name, the hotel restaurant of Marrakech’s Villa des Orangers greets you gently, calmly, and infused with the scent of pressed orange skin and soft pulp. As you progress through candle-lit courtyards and beneath opulent arches, you’ll arrive in a cosy world of fountains, hammered metals, soft leather and elaborate wall moldings. In winter, a crackling fire is lit, allowing shadows to sway and flicker across the rich restaurant walls. In elevated Moroccan style, you can expect the classics of North African cuisine, albeit prepared with an unrivaled quality and attention to detail.

6) Ravello: Il Flauto di Pan
COURTESY

Combine the easygoing aristocratic charm of The Talented Mr. Ripley with the luxuriant grace of a high-class Italian eatery, and you’re left with the sumptuous restaurant at Villa Cimbrone. With a tasting menu that nods to the culinary history of the Amalfi coast, and a wine menu to knock you senseless, this gutsy slice of La Dolce Vita has one of the most satisfying landscapes and views in the whole of Italy, where the rolling, dramatic cliffs are framed by the curvaceous arches and statue-studded terraces of the hotel’s enviably historic architecture. Evocative, exclusive, and down-right euphoric, this dining experience is otherworldly and impressive.

7) Tignes: Le Panoramic Restaurant

COURTESY

Located high up in snowy Tignes, upon the heady platter of the Grand Motte glacier, is Le Panoramic. Named after its (you guessed it…) panoramic views, this heart-warming restaurant embodies the unfiltered spirit of chalet-style dining. Decked with rugs, fireplaces, fur throws and wood-paneled walls, this eatery embodies all things comfy and cozy. For those who want to rock up in style, there’s a funicular that will transport you within inches of your table. Expect to slalom your way through proper mountain Savoyarde fare, aka tons of decadent fondue, and to return home much heavier—and happier—than when you arrived.

8) Paris: Chez Julien
COURTESY

Located in the Marais, Paris’s Chez Julien is every inch a French restaurant. A listed historical monument in its own right, this Belle Époque masterpiece features one of the city’s most photographed facades, dripping in vines and canopies which arch indulgently over its charming bistro tables. In true brasserie style, you’ll feast on good-fringed plates of scallop tartare, béarnaise, and frites. For die-hard romantics and wine-glass-waving poets alike, this is the ultimate in Gallic coziness and its culinary culture.

9) Costwolds: The Ox Barn Bar
COURTESY

With culinary panache and a modern-traditional milieux, head chef Charlie Hibbert steals the show in this minimal yet warm retreat in the English countryside. Inspired by its home nestled within ThymeThe Ox Barn focuses on soft, earthen tones, rugs, rustic details, and cosy and dreamlike lighting. Hibbert’s menu is given space to sing here; expect local ingredients and spectacularly-treated items such as soufflé, pumpkin, and pave. With a quintessential barn-dining ambiance and a gorgeous location in the English woods and wilds, Ox Barn manages to feel both straightforward and sumptuous in the same breath.

10) Stockholm: FEM SMÅ HUS
COURTESY

Located in the heart of Stockholm’s vibrant Old Town,

FEM SMÅ HUS is a tucked-away eatery spread across five small, traditional Swedish houses. Served amidst the exposed, expressive stonework and warmly flickering candles, the dishes of cloudberry, reindeer, and herring are all properly Swedish and uncomplicatedly good. Standing out are the cozy arches and inviting nooks amongst which diners work their way through some of the city’s most finely-prepared food, giving the restaurant a truly intimate, homey, and romantic energy.

11) Maldives: Soneva Fushi
COURTESY

This miracle in the Maldives is a new organic dining concept which sees its guests set up at a table in the middle of the kitchen gardens. The five-course menu is based around colors, green umami, and single ingredients—prepared in often remarkable ways. An authentic farm-to-table experience, begin your evening with a tour of the garden, where you’ll pick, taste and smell the actual ingredients for your meal. Of course, the gardens themselves are exotic, beautiful and fragrant, making this a truly special and extraordinarily cozy way to eat.

12) Koh Kood, Thailand: Soneva Kiri
COURTESY

Fine dining taken to new heights, and in this case, it’s quite literal. Dine in the luscious canopy of Koh Kood, gazing out over the lapping water and boulder-strewn shoreline beneath at Soneva Kiri. Your table for the evening will be a cozy woven bamboo tree pod, with dishes served by impressive zip-lining waiters. Far from chaotic, this is an astonishingly suave and intimate way to eat.
