How a Gallery Girl Dresses For The Job

For the 1942 opening of her gallery Art of This Century, Peggy Guggenheim paired a custom-made white gown with earrings designed for the occasion: one by sculptor (and friend) Alexander Calder, one by painter (and friend) Yves Tanguy—a soigné demonstration of her commitment to the competing schools of abstract and surrealist art on view in her boundary-pushing new space in midtown Manhattan. It’s easy to be a walking work of art in literal statement earrings when you’re a Guggenheim whose friends make MoMA-worthy sculpture one day and earrings for you the next. Today, though, it’s a woman further down the art-world food chain who has captured the imagination of fashion designers and young professional women alike. Enter the gallery girl—the brainy,...

Octavia Spencer On Her Style Icons, Beauty Secrets, And Everyday Favorite Things

For all her mega successes, we’d argue that onscreen, Octavia Spencer really hasn’t gotten a fair shake, sartorially speaking: She’s donned a midcentury maid’s uniform (The Help), dystopian hippie garb (The Divergent Series: Allegiant), and mousy secretarial layers (last year’s NASA heartwarmer, Hidden Figures). This month, Spencer, 47, returns to the big screen in The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro’s twisted Cold War fairy tale. Her look? Drab janitorial dresses. And in next month’s pulp thriller Small Town Crime, she’s again stuck in dowdy cardigans. Maybe that’s why in real life, the effervescent Oscar winner is all about leopard prints, spa days, and look-at-me lashes.

It’s Jacket Season—And I, For One, Am Thrilled

When I woke up this morning, bright-eyed and bushy-eyebrowed, tiny blue birds flitting around my head, this is what I did. I saw a blanket of grey clouds, felt a chilly breeze drift through the weird crack in my bedroom window, smiled to myself, and thought, It's motherf**king jacket season. (With apologies to McSweeney's.)

i love to wear jackets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
— Estelle Tang (@waouwwaouw) 2017년 10월 26일

Let me explain. A jacket is a hug. A jacket is an extra layer of fashionable expression. A jacket is a good thing to leave at your friend's house so you get to go there again (sorry to the four people I've done this to in the last two weeks). Jackets are treasures of the garment world, and I am...

Okay Instagram, I See Your Fashion Berets, But I Don’t Want To Wear One

Those of French and Spanish descent, you are exempt, please carry on.

Everyone is suddenly wearing a fashion beret and it's making me all kinds of uncomfortable. Let me clarify, not the beret itself. There are far greater injustices in the world than the infiltration of a small felt (or leather, or wool) accessory. It's that fashion berets speak to our obsession with emulating the mythical French Girl. Perhaps you don't have a closet full of well-tailored separates or the digestive enzymes for refined carbohydrates; there's now a trendy hat for that. The fashion beret is a costume. According to historians, berets can be traced back to Jesus Bronze Age tombs in Italy and Denmark. French soldiers wore berets during WWII. Che Guevara and Fidel...

5 Style Secrets I Learned from Pamela Love

"I believe that certain stones attract different energies."

Few designers have the good witch/bad bitch aesthetic covered quite like Pamela Love. The New York native makes jewelry magic with precious metals and super-charged stones, and has turned bolder looks like stacked rings and ear cuffs into daytime must-haves for creative women worldwidew—when Zoe Kravitz flips off the paparazzi, she wears Pamela Love rings to do it. Now Love has her first standalone store experience thanks to the CFDA's Retail Lab, a space at Cadillac House that indoctrinates fashion's next generation into in-person sales, along with tech help from Accenture. "It's my first experience having a retail space," she explained at her store's opening dinner, which happened at Cherchez Midi in downtown New York. "We're learning...

What Happened When I, A Garbage Magnet, Wore All White For a Week

As soon as the tiniest tendrils of sun peek out from behind winter's clouds, I start to feel personally targeted by fashion media. Dreamy photo shoots of women wearing translucent linen! Street-style shots of creamy scalloped hems! Lists: 10 Amazing Dresses That Are As Blindingly White as a Baby Unicorn! A real marketing email subject line: "Time to break out your summer whites!" White shorts, white skirts, white halter tops, white sneakers, white denim: all white, all the time. What a lie! I think every spring. Surely no one can just WEAR white with impunity. It may repel sunlight. It may seem like a winning sartorial option after three months of gloomy chill. It may even give one a feeling of...

11 Women On Their Go-To Work Outfits During The Summer

Getting dressed for work during the summer can be a bit of a drag. You want something that's going to keep you cool and possibly take you from your desk to al fresco drinks—all while sticking to your office dress code. Here, 11 women in various fields share what they often wear once the temperature starts to rise.

NYREE CORBY, FOUNDER AND CEO OF FAME AND PARTNERS "This summer I'm loving the tartans that came through on the recent runways, so my favorite wardrobe piece has to be this vintage Comme des Garcons skirt. I team it with a pretty white ruffle top from Fame and Partners's new daywear launch, Proenza Schouler shoes, and giant black beaded...

Perfect Looks To Copy This May

Maybe it's because May delivers the unofficial start of summer, but there's just something about this time of year that has us feeling really excited about getting dressed again. After a decently wet April (here in New York City, at least), we're a bit tired of wearing jackets, clunky shoes, and anything else constricting — or, to be honest, anything that'll leave us sweating. So something new, albeit something we experience every single year, helps reignite our creativity. The tricky thing about May, though, is while it helps usher in the warmest days of the year, the month itself isn't always no-jacket, no-pants weather. Instead, it's a transitional time that requires adequate layering and styling — something we don't necessarily dedicate...
