What do Tom Ford, Raf Simons, Pierre Balmain, Pierre Cardin and Gianni Versace all have in common? Before kickstarting a flourishing career in fashion, each of these individuals enrolled to study architecture or industrial design. Fernando Garcia, one-half of the creative director duo behind Monse and Oscar de la Renta, is among that list of designers. Inheriting the heritage, history and signature style of a brand as well known on the American (and worldwide) fashion stage as Oscar de la Renta requires equal parts humility and confidence; and it appears that after launching their own line, Monse, together after a brief departure from the ODLR atelier, Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia have those traits in spades. The two recognize the pressures of designing in the shadow of one of fashion's greats, but it doesn't seem to hinder their process.
