We take a moment to mediate on the most provocative shade of all

“Red protects itself. No colour is as territorial. It stakes a claim, is on the alert against the spectrum,” said filmmaker Derek Jarman in his 1994 book Chroma: A Book of Color. The incendiary nature of the colour red has started political revolutions, indulged in pleasures of the flesh and flirted with danger in its many forms throughout the history of cinema, art and fashion alike. Hues of scarlet, crimson, vermilion and burgundy, incorporated into on-screen costume and propelled down the runway, act as telling flags to the nature of its wearer, not to mention the intention of a designer. Here, we present 16 red pieces of clothing for Autumn/Winter 2017, as...

Red Is the Most Important Color in Fashion Right Now

In the classic 1850 Hawthorne novel The Scarlet Letter, adulteress Hester Prynne is made to wear a garishly bright “A” as a symbol of her transgressions. The “A,” as we know, is for adulteress, the scarlet is for sin. Indeed, it’s a color that’s ubiquitous in literature and popular culture for its manifold meanings. The symbolism-rich shade is also the color of love (and liking on Instagram), passion, the devil, rage, bullfighting, blood, courage, communism, the labor movement, “STOP, ” and Republicans. It’s associated, too, with that most masculine of planets, Mars, and conversely with the recent A Day Without a Woman movement, which was spearheaded by the organizers of the Women’s March. This campaign, which took place on March...

Colour Inspiration – S/S ’17 – “Fiesta”

The high energy Fiesta is a harbinger of excitement, encouraging free-spirited exploration into the unknown but welcoming locales that represents a bright orange shade that borderlines on red.

A strong and fiery, yellow-based red – the vivid Fiesta provides a stark contrast to the calming, softer nature of this season’s palette.

Mugler offered a sensual off-the-shoulder dress with slits while, Tibi went for a casual yet striking look utilizing the shade only on the sweatshirt and styling it with wide-legged striped pants.

How To Get The Perfect Red Lipstick

A la Amandla Stenberg's low-key rouge. Ruby Woo, Heat Wave, Coco Rouge—even the most beloved red lipsticks make me feel like a middle-school Sandy in Grease—more clownish than cool. But makeup artist and photographer Robin Black insists there's a perfect rouge out there for everyone. "When people tell me they can't wear red, it's usually because they haven't found the exact right shade yet," she says. Consider Amandla Stenberg's low-key rendition, the Holy Grail of crimson. According to Black, "warm reds" like Stenberg's cherry shade are the most universally flattering and easy to wear. "Keep it casual by pairing bright red lipstick with groomed brows, mascara, and natural skin," she recommends. To get the look, try one of the easy-to-wear warm shades seen below. Chanel Rouge Allure Intense Lip Colour in Incandescente; M.A.C lipstick in Lady Danger; Dolce...

Backstage at GIORGIO ARMANI PRIVÉ: How to Wear Bright Pink Lipstick

Why "pink is the new red." "Break the rules by daring to be shocking," said Giorgio Armani international makeup artist Linda Cantello backstage at Armani Privé's show fall '15 couture show. "Pink is the new red." Cantello juxtaposed fuchsia lips with softly smoked eyes, blending Smooth Silk Eye Pencil in Shade 8 into upper lashes, and extending outer corners with Eye Tint in Shade 7 for a subtle lift. Nails were painted a lip-matching bright pink—called of course, Shocking. While the punk pink lip color seen on the runway won't be available until September, Rouge Ecstasy #500 topped with Flash Lacquer #511 gives a nearly identical finish. But why are '80s pink lips—seen at both Chanel and Schiaparelli—replacing red as the bold lip gold...
