We take a moment to mediate on the most provocative shade of all

“Red protects itself. No colour is as territorial. It stakes a claim, is on the alert against the spectrum,” said filmmaker Derek Jarman in his 1994 book Chroma: A Book of Color. The incendiary nature of the colour red has started political revolutions, indulged in pleasures of the flesh and flirted with danger in its many forms throughout the history of cinema, art and fashion alike. Hues of scarlet, crimson, vermilion and burgundy, incorporated into on-screen costume and propelled down the runway, act as telling flags to the nature of its wearer, not to mention the intention of a designer. Here, we present 16 red pieces of clothing for Autumn/Winter 2017, as...

A Celebration of Individuality at Marni A/W17

363617

In an industry that can often feel a little like a game of musical chairs, Francesco Risso’s appointment as Marni’s creative director was one of a number of 2016’s power moves. He had spent the former seven years working behind-the-scenes at Prada, and while his new role might not have the same headline impact of Raf Simons moving to Calvin Klein, or Anthony Vaccarello to Saint Laurent, his first womenswear outing was hotly anticipated by a sphere which reveres that brand’s forward-looking creativity above all others. His debut collection proved Mrs Prada’s trust in his aesthetic to be well-placed: it had all of the irreverent eclecticism that Marni is famed for, alongside the considered intellectualism of Prada, and plenty of Risso’s own colour besides.

The Photographer Behind Marni’s Mischievous S/S17 Campaign

363131
Barbara Probst is renowned for producing images that comment upon the seductive and illusory effect that photography so often employs. Cameras, studio lights and photographic equipment are intentionally made visible in her work and, as a consequence, the processes of image making become exposed to the viewer. When she began to work with the medium, Probst was initially interested in dissecting what a photograph actually is and how it functions, finding interest not in the subject itself, but rather in the many ways she could document it. Fascinated by the fact that there are countless ways of representing one and the same moment depending on the decisions of the photographer, she exploited this intrigue for the Marni S/S17 campaign, creating...

Supermodels Are Back at Milan Fashion Week!

Arriving early to the Philosophy do Lorenzo Serafini show on Saturday evening, I spotted Anna Dello Russo, the ubiquitous fashion stylist, standing by the photographers in an unremarkable black dress and wearing turquoise hair extensions that have prompted many editors this week to start calling her a mermaid. Fashion people are not known for their subtlety, nor is Dello Russo, who minutes later appeared on the runway and took her seat wearing a transparent white lace dress that purposefully revealed her swim-toned body and black bra and panties beneath. In a sense, she was bringing a new dimension to Serafini's catchy collections at Philosophy, showing how the designs look on a real person, and demonstrating that fashion can be as...
