In 2017, Quilting, Knitting, And Needlepoint Were Hot Trends On The Runways

Photos: Indigital.tv
Designers have been reacting to political upheaval with lots of art and craft this past year. Besides Jeff Koons’s The Masters collection for Louis Vuitton, there were references to Giuseppe Arcimboldo at Comme des Garçons and to Niki de Saint Phalle at Dior. If you prefer your art on the wall, rather than your body, there were other pieces with homespun charm. The aesthetic that seems to best capture our times is a crumbly one that evokes a grandmother’s handmade sweaters and a camper’s DIY projects. Suddenly, smocking, quilting, knitting, and needlepoint are à la mode. But these age-old crafts are being practiced in a new way in 2017. By leaving hems unraveled and threads uncut, designers seem to be plugging for authenticity (versus...

Would You Quit Shopping If You Had An “Unlimited” Wardrobe Of Borrowed Clothes?

00-story-image-shopping
Shopping changed a lot in 2017, but perhaps the biggest shift was the rise of fashion’s new “sharing economy.” One of the coolest ways to shop right now is through consignment e-tailers, where you can buy a gently-used Chloé bag for a fraction of the price or find an archival Balenciaga dress you spent 10 years searching for. Stella McCartney is endorsing buying (and selling) her secondhand clothes through The RealReal, and indie designers like Ace & Jig have arranged global swap meets for customers to trade pieces they aren’t wearing anymore. It’s all set up for serious fashion fangirl-ing—but these designers also recognize the sustainable benefit of sharing clothes. The logic is pretty simple: The more use we get out of a garment, the better,...

Bella And Gigi Hadid Share Everything—Even Shoes

embed-gigi-hadid-celebrity-style
Gigi and Bella Hadid share more than good genes, they also share clothes. It’s one of the many benefits of sisterhood, particularly when you’re the same size and have the same taste in outerwear, including a leopard-print jacket they swapped back and forth all last winter (for the record, Bella insists she had it first.) Now the shoe appears to be on the other foot, quite literally. Yesterday, Bella was seen borrowing Gigi’s Off-White x Timberland work boots and Andy Wolf sunglasses when she and Gigi headed out to do some shopping in New York. Gigi didn’t seem to mind, though, lacing into Dr. Martens that could have easily have come from Bella's closet. (The Hadid sisters made a similar statement...

Cardi B Gives The Most Extra Style Advice In Her Steve Madden Ads And We Are Living For It

hbz-cardi-steve-madden-index-1513202697

After topping charts with a song about Louboutins, Cardi B continues her shoe obsession with a new partnership with Steve Madden. The rapper curated a collection of the brand's shoes—which ranges from vampy over-the-knee boots to work-friendly pumps—and models the styles in a video campaign. In the cheeky, unfiltered clips, (reminiscent of her own Instagram videos) she offers her "daily tips" on dressing, accessorizing, and basically living your best life.

On day-to-night style:
"Alright, motherf*ckers! Now, every woman needs to have a pointy shoe. If I button this shirt, I could wear this to a business meeting but I could wear this to the club."

On making affordable clothes look expensive: "I'm just gonna keep it real, right? I look rich as hell ('cause I am)....

How to Wear Florals If You’re Not a Girly-Girl

Pink and frou-frou not your thing? We feel you. As spring comes in full bloom, floral-print-everything is in abundance, and that’s not really good news for all us non girly-girls out there. So what to do? Well, we have two options: 1. Avoid wearing any florals whatsoever (but how boring is that?), or 2. Toughen up your florals. (I think we’ll go with option #2.)

The first step to toughing up florals is choosing the right print. Go for one with a black base, like the Topshop set below. Then throw on your moto classics: a slick, leather jacket, and badass combat boots. Amp it up with a bright colored bag and pile on heavy metal jewelry for that extra edge.

I Tried 4 Of The (Literal) Biggest Trends Of The Season

PHOTOGRAPHED BY JIN AND DANA. ILLUSTRATED BY ANNA SUDIT.
Uniqlo turtleneck. Jacquemus skirt. Axel Arigato sneakers.
To be completely honest, it's never been super-easy to be under 5'2" and into fashion. It's not that we petite people don't have fun getting dressed every day, but there are certain — well, many — obstacles we tend to face, like the fact that those thigh-high boots at Balenciaga are longer than the entire length of my body, or that extra-wide-legged, floor-skimming pants kind-of feel like a joke on anyone under six-feet tall. So it makes sense that I got a little, er, nervous when I realized clothing and accessories were heading in a bigger, giant-everything direction for spring. As a teeny-tiny person, it's understandably a bummer when you realize everything "everyone" will be wearing this season will surely swallow...
