Edie Campbell Writes Open Letter About The Abuse Of Fashion Models

Edie Campbell has penned a powerful public letter addressing the ill treatment of fashion models and urging the industry to put an end to systematic abuse and negligence. The model—who has starred in campaigns for Burberry, Marc Jacobs, and Louis Vuitton—voiced her frustration at how recent media coverage on the issue seems to only address abuse claims concerning Terry Richardson, when in reality it goes far beyond one man. In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein allegations, model Cameron Russell shared a number of horrifying stories that she’d heard about within the world of fashion. She used Instagram to share screenshots of messages sent to her by friends, colleagues and followers detailing the abuse they have received. “Since Cameron Russell enlisted the help of many fashion people...

Natalie Nootenboom On Being The First Plus Size Model To Walk Anna Sui And Championing For Body Positivity

Earlier this month, 16-year-old Natalie Nootenboom made history when she became the first plus-size model to walk in the Anna Sui show during New York Fashion Week. The 5’11, half Japanese model and niece to DJ Steve Aoki was once bullied for the very traits that have made her a standout in the modeling industry: her long dark hair, full lips, green eyes, and distinct Asian features. But Nootenboom believes her mission is one of empowerment and continuing the body positivity movement that has already helped her feel more represented. “I'm an ambassador for women and for body image,” Nootenboom tells ELLE. “I think that the more plus size models are out there and the more that they are incorporated into...

Carla Bruni Uncensored

Eric Guillemain

France’s former first lady on her life after politics, raising two children, and covering AC/DC

here are many enchanting things about the onetime resident of the Élysée Palace, the singer- songwriter and model Carla Bruni, but how she refers to her husband might take the gâteau. She calls him “my man.” That would be Nicolas Sarkozy, the former president of France. Take these moments, for instance: “Even when my man was the president, I’d take the Metro and go anywhere,” Bruni says of her life in Paris, enjoying a luxurious French puff from an e-cigarette. (“This is what you use if you want to get rid of the addiction,” she explains.) As for his vices, “my man doesn’t drink at all....

Yesterday, Hadid finally made a triumphant return to horseback riding, which she shared on Instagram.
She wrote, "Got to hack this beautiful baby girl today!!!! ❤️🐎 My one and greatest passion will always be horses and now I am back! with my heart re-filled with love and so much happiness..😍💪🏼❤️."
As the video proves, Hadid is still as confident as ever on a horse, and savors her time riding.

Meet The Model Turned Ocean Warrior Out To Change The Way Fashion Thinks About Plastic

Love it or hate it, plastic is a part of everyday life. Whether you’re sipping from a Starbucks cup or wearing synthetic fabrics, it’s hard to escape its presence. Still, Maryna Linchuk is committed to getting people to rethink their relationship with the material. Teaming with eco-organization Parley, the Belarusian modeling star spent her winter break cleaning up the refuse-covered beaches of the Maldives. Though she’d visited the island for photo shoots in the past, getting a bird’s-eye view of the destruction was an eye-opener for Linchuk. “It’s shocking to me that this material that is so unfriendly, so dangerous for animals, and potentially toxic to us has become so normal in our society,” says Linchuk over email. “A plastic...

Bella And Gigi Hadid Reveal What It’s Like Working Together

It's been a long fashion month for Gigi and Bella Hadid. It kicked off in February with the launch of Gigi's second collection with Tommy Hilfiger and went on to include the sisters' multiple runway appearances, enviable street style looks and even a few tears. Now, the duo is in the City of Lights, with Paris Fashion Week in full swing and Bella's highly-anticipated Chrome Hearts collab just days from dropping. Over the past few weeks, the sisters, aged 21 and 20, respectively, have both walked in shows like Tommy Hilfiger, Anna Sui, Moschino and H&M. This Is How Gigi Hadid Prepares For Fashion Week

What does go through the mind of a model like Gigi Hadid before she walks in a huge show like Chanel, Versace or even her own Tommy Hilfiger line?
Hadid, currently one of the industry's most sought-after models, has revealed how she prepares for show season – both mentally and physically – in a new film for Reebok.
"Before I walk, I usually think of what the designer wants from me, whether that's an energy or getting into the music or calming myself down with breathing," she explains in the video. "I have to focus on what my job is that day."

But she says that having a job based on appearances does have its drawbacks. "Because my job is...

How Models Like Ashley Graham and Gigi Hadid Are Democratizing Fashion

Photographed by Inez and Vinoodh, Vogue, March 2017
In a climate of immigration bans and building walls, the biggest names in 2017 make the case that there isn’t just one type of American girl—nor has there ever been. What is a woman supposed to look like? Agnolo Firenzuola was certain he knew. In his influential 1548 treatise A Dialogue on the Beauty of Women, Firenzuola detailed the female ideal, specifying, for instance, the correct distance between the tip of the nose and the bow of the lip. “The true and right color for hair,” he wrote, “is a fair yellow.” As for ears, “a middle size is to be desired, with the shell finely turned.” Firenzuola’s wonkish beauty decrees read as comical now. And yet: Has there ever been an...

Top Moel Hanne Gaby Odiele Says She Is Intersex

Belgian model Hanne Gaby Odiele, 29, has worked with designers like Alexander Wang, Chanel, and Dior. And now, she's making her voice heard about another part of her life: she is intersex. In an interview with USA Today, Odiele revealed she was born with androgen insensitivity syndrome, meaning she had XY chromosomes and internal, undescended testes. When she was 10, her parents told her that if she did not have those testes removed, she could get cancer and wouldn't develop "as a normal, female girl." So she had the surgery, and at 18, she had vaginal reconstructive surgery. Odiele is speaking out now because she wants to show how intersex kids can sometimes be forced into having surgeries either without their consent...
