Is Consumer-Friendly Activism a Sign Of Feminist Progress—Or Just a Sellout?

landscape-1493065190-elle-politics-fashion
Sady Doyle: Buy It, Wear it, Spread It To hear some tell it, there are two ways to be a feminist: One version entails ceaseless seriousness, migrating from protest to pro- test with a Dworkin book in your bag. The other—the "fluffy," not-really-feminist feminism—consists of sticking a solid-gold safety pin (signifying solidarity with immigrants and minority groups) on your Beyoncé-inspired beret and calling it a day. Yes, the gold safety pin is real. It costs $233 and has a mother-of-pearl clasp, and buying it does not in itself constitute a political act. Nor does applying lipstick in a shade called "Activist" (by British brand Illamasqua) or lacing up a pair of Keds—"Ladies first since 1916"—whose latest empowerment-themed tag lines include "Make Your...

GettyImages-669219076
Kylie Jenner once staked the following very weighty claim: "I started wigs." That’s definitely not true, but nonetheless, she’s still wearing wigs all the time. She’s even wearing them this week at Coachella, where temperatures are topping 100 degrees. But in an interview with Elle.com at said music festival, both Kylie and Kendall Jenner took a few moments to discuss what their hair looks like beneath the wigs. After Kylie clarified that the wide-ranging hair colors she often sports are wigs, Kendall chimed in to say, "She would have no hair otherwise." "It’s not a secret,” Kylie added. "I couldn’t do [bleach] on my hair. This is much easier…You know, my hair is actually to my shoulders." Kendall added: "We have the...

Victoria Beckham Awarded An Obe by Prince William

untitled-article-1492613338
In an act of solidarity with those hoping to make the notoriously difficult transition from pop music to high fashion, Buckingham Palace has recognised and awarded the inimitable VB's positive impact upon the industry. Accepting the award earlier today from heir to the throne and one time FaceTimer of Lady Gaga, Prince William, Victoria said "It was an absolute pleasure to be at Buckingham Palace today. I'm proud to be British, honoured and humbled to receive my OBE from the Duke of Cambridge. If you dream big and work hard you can accomplish great things." Indeed, cracking the notoriously traditional and heirarchical British fashion industry is no mean feat. Introducing her first collection in 2008 at New York Fashion Week spring/summer 09,...

a
Calvin Klein Underwear latest campaign celebrates women all of ages ranging from 18 to 73. It captures them real women, confident in their own skin relaying sweet memories and tells tales of stolen first kisses. Filmmaker Sofia Coppola handpicked the cast featuring Kirsten Dunst, Rashida Jones, Nathalia Love, Laura Harrier, Maya Thurman-Hawke, daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, and Chase Sui Wonders, Anna Sui’s niece. Coppola wanted to move away from the typical lingerie ad by portraying the women as raw, real and cool.  Sophia noted: “I think they relate to me, and to the camera, in a different way — they’re not so much like goddesses; they’re more approachable.” Take a look at our top five short films below of the black-and-white “vignettes...

b5bazj6c7vz3jarj94d6051n9
The ultimate style icon Victoria Beckham released her first affordable collection with Target yesterday: a sign of a designer's demand and ubiquity, Beckham has come a long way from girl band hopeful to fashion titan. And although the World Wide Web loves to pick apart those images and videos of her from the '90s and '00s where she's running around being fashionably questionable, perhaps we have all missed her ultimate trick. When put in context of the time, VB was in fact constantly ahead of the trend. So ahead, in fact, that we decided to dig through the Vicky-archives to expose some of her most influential looks from the era when the height of style was an Herve Leger dress and...

Miranda Kerr Just Designed a Charitable Denim Collection—And The Results Are Seriously Wardrobe-Worthy

landscape-1490390594-shot-06-010-v4
Early arrivals are familiar for Miranda Kerr. After a childhood spent kicking around Australia's rural outback, she broke into the modeling industry at just 13, walking the runways for brands like Balenciaga, Prada, and Victoria's Secret before earning a spot as the world's 10th highest paid model last year. But at the apex of her career, she's still pondering beginnings: "I was born 6 weeks premature," says the Sydney native, now 33. "So I'm very passionate about the health and welfare of women and babies...
