Hands Off! The Coolest Girls Won’t Be Carryling a Bag Next Season

Anyone who has drunken the cross-body Kool-Aid can attest to the addictive nature of not having to hold a handbag. Allowing it to rest easily on your hip isn’t only a breeze, it also has that “devil-may-care spirit” to it, or—as they say here in Paris—a certain je ne sais quoi. Carine, known to forgo bags in lieu of pockets, perhaps exemplifies this better than any one else. Fortunately for us all, this freedom doesn’t simply stop there. This week’s Paris runwaysoffered plenty of riffs on the concept.

The most-bold iteration of this was at Valentino, where designer Pierpaolo Piccioli took his signature romantic mood in sportier direction. He proposed a four-point harness style, because why should babies in...

The Most Popular Kate Spade New York Accessories of All Time Are Such a Throwback

Most-Popular-Kate-Spade-Accessories (1)
Kate Spade New York is the brand behind some pretty iconic accessories. I'll never forget the yacht clutch my boyfriend's aunt secured ahead of her vacation cruise or the woven animal-shaped picnic baskets. The label's themed bags and jewels make for pretty fabulous street style moments, so it's no wonder you see them all over Fashion Week. If a statement item catches your eye, you can bet it's Kate Spade. So when we got the chance to talk to Deborah Lloyd, president and chief creative officer at the label, we had to ask her about her favorite pieces of all time. This New York Fashion Week, Deborah will be showing Spring 2017, a collection inspired by her travels to Morocco. Still,...

Maison Margiela’s Subversive Adaptation of the ‘It Bag’

5AC Shoulder Bag, Maison Margiela Grained calf leather, 27cm x 42cm The conversations surrounding ‘It bags’ are, more often than not, dominated by ideas of elegance; their designs traditionally take inspiration from the agonisingly glamorous Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco, or Jane ‘I exude effortless Parisian chic’ Birkin. It is less common, however, that a bag possessing such potential for ‘It’ status take its references from an obscure counterculture bordering on the ultra-geeky – unless such a piece hails from the always-subversive house of Maison Margiela. Named after the French word ‘sac’, but written out in “L33t speak” – a tech language pioneered by online gamers and messageboard aficionados – the 5AC is a sci-fi take on a calfskin classic, distorted through the lens...

All the Chic People Are Doing It: Toiletry Bags as Handbags

Devised so that unassuming shoppers would buy more products they don't need to meet the minimum spend, the gift with purchase is often not even that worth it. But as an accessory, it has now been given a greater purpose in life than languishing in a closet somewhere or helping retailers turn a profit by waging psychological warfare on consumers. A brief history of the toiletry-bag-as-real-bag: The year was 2015. The vibe was right, the aesthetic was strong, and pulling out a Glossier-pink bubble-wrap pouch in a bathroom could ensure that you'd have seven new best friends flanking you in seconds. (Still does.) Then super stylist Jayne Min carried hers out in the open—not as a cult chick magnet to be...

5 New Layering Fashion Formulas to Commit to Memory

I know how to layer. You know how to layer. We all know how to layer. It's one of those routine things that everyone does in life without thinking, like eating or breathing. You're cold, you throw on a long-sleeve tee. Still cold, and you add a sweater or hoodie. Still cold? You pile a chunky knit, a puffer—anything with maximum insulation—onto the heap. To that we say, we can all do better. Instead of the usual button-down-and-sweater pairing that you had on repeat last year, consider a tie-neck blouse with marinière stripes, and a metallic bomber. Or, treat your turtleneck (here are 15 options if you happen to be looking for one) as a base and style it with a faux fur vest, a pleated...

Tibi Launches a Line of Handbags, and They’re All Gorg

Beloved fashion brand Tibi is expanding into handbags, and we couldn’t be more excited about it. Leading up their 20th anniversary, the brand’s creative director Amy Smilovic partnered up with accessories mastermind Myriam Schaefer (the famed designer behind Lariat bag for Balenciaga as well as her own namesake line of bags) to create The Tibi Chapeau Bags by Myriam Schaefer, a handbag line designed for the discerning woman who appreciates quality and refinement but always with functionality, a shared vision of Schaefer and Smilovic. The bags come in three delectable styles: The Garcon, a cross-body; the Mignon, a satchel; and our personal fave, the Papa, a roomy tote that's big enough to fit all the random stuff that we somehow accumulate throughout the day....

The Balenciaga Beach Bag Instagram Is Obsessed With

The colorful Bazar shopper from designer Demna Gvasalia's first collection is catching everyone's attention this summer.

The new Balenciaga Bazar beach bag is so large that it could almost be worn as a garment in its own right. Made of leather with colorful stripes, it looks and feels like the luxury version of the plasticky bags found at a 99 cent store. This item, however, retails for$1,645.

It is fitting that this bag in particular comes from the Balenciaga Fall 2016 collection, which was Vetements designer Demna Gvasalia's first for the brand. It is both luxurious and functional; Margiela-like in its surreal size, (Gvasalia previously worked for the brand), and yet still in...

Thom Browne’s Wiener-Dog Bag Made Me a Street-Style Star

Thanks to Hector Browne, I enjoyed modest success during Paris Fashion Week as a street-style star. In 30 years of covering shows this has never happened before — photographers rushing up to snap my picture as I trudged up the steps of the Grand Palais, some even murmuring, “So cute!” Of course, I knew the paps weren’t interested in me; they were interested in my style surrogate, a furry, 18-inch-long bag that bore an uncanny resemblance to a wirehaired dachshund, in every way — same rough coat, short legs, adorable expression of canine sufferance — except in one obvious detail. My little guy came with handles. I got the idea to bring Hector to Paris after seeing him in Thom Browne’s show...

The Weird Way Proenza Schouler Wants You To Wear Your Bag

As seen on the fall 2016 runway.

Thought you knew how to hold a bag? Of course you did! There's not much that really goes into it—dangle it in the crook of your arm Taylor Swift-style, hold a top-handle bag with one hand, wear a shoulder strap purse on, well, your shoulder, or sport a cross body bag diagonally across your chest hitting at the waist.
But wait. Proenza Schouler has something different in mind. At their fall 2016 show each model who was tasked with carrying a bag held it in a very untraditional way.

Shoulder strap bags were worn cross-body style, hitting right under the armpit.

They were also folded in half and held lunch bag style.
