France’s Most Famous Curvy Model on Being Objectified

15-clementine-2.w529.h352
A few months ago, news outlets like The Daily Mail reported that Christian Louboutin Beauty had cast its first-ever plus-size campaign star, French model Clémentine Desseaux. This turned out to be not quite true. In reality, Desseaux had posted a video of herself wearing the new Louboutin Beauty lipsticks and the video had gone viral. When Louboutin regrammed it, viewers took it to mean something official from the brand. People worldwide were disappointed, and for good reason. Beauty products have nothing to do with size, but apart from Beth Ditto for M.A.C and Queen Latifah for CoverGirl, it's rare to find a plus-size model or actress as the face of a beauty brand. Last week in Paris, the Cut talked to Desseaux — who...

Margot Robbie’s Coolest Denim Styling Tip? Put a Patch on It!

1
Personalized denim is having a moment. From Off-White’s collaboration with Levi’s to Faith Connexion’s hand-painted jeans, the Fall 2016 collections were filled with covetable, one-of-a-kind true blues. Perhaps the quickest and easiest way to customize them is with patches, a DIY trend that’s been seen on the runways at 3.1 Phillip Lim,DKNY, and Stella McCartney in the past, and is now being picked up by Hollywood’s A-list. Margot Robbie was seen getting in on the personalized denim action at LAX airport earlier today. The 25-year-old actress livened up a pair of boyfriend-fit jeans with varsity-inspired patches that had a throwback ’60s vibe. Optic white Nike kicks gave the look a minimal finish, while a slouchy sweater and circular shades amped up the subtle,...

In the summer of 2009, 19-year-old Samantha Elias wore a “grandma skirt” to a party at the Jane Hotel in downtown New York – simple in concept, life changing in its effect. “I pulled up this ugly, printed skirt to make it a dress, paired it with a belt that didn’t match, and got a ridiculous amount of attention,” Samantha explained. “My [twin sister] Morgan was there as well and couldn’t believe it. People were complimenting me the entire night. So we thought, okay, there’s something to...

How Much Do Runway Models Matter for Young Designers?

1-brock-collection
During fashion month, the majority of attention given to runway casting is focused on the big-name brands, the powerhouses. It goes without saying that Chanel, Prada, and Marc Jacobs will all have their pick of talent, with excellent casts filled with big-name models, but for labels that aren’t yet household names, assembling a cast with star power requires some ingenuity. Competition from bigger clients, the internal politics of the modeling industry, and shifts in what an “ideal cast” means for any given brand add up to a serious challenge. Still, some of Fall 2016’s most noteworthy runways came from buzzy labels on only their first or second season: Koché’s eclectic mix of established stars and street-cast kids captured the vibrant...

6 Things Skinny Bitches Do Every Day

1458057703-elle-skinny-index

When a beauty editor friend invited me to The Skinny Bitch Collective in Paris, I knew what to expect. Founded by celebrity trainer Russ Bateman, the London-based fitness cult plays out on Instagram with black and white snippets from Bateman's punishing workouts—think VS veterans jump squatting in tandem and a sliding move that makes bear crawls look easy. Puffy from my PFW diet—baguette, French fries, red wine, repeat—I wanted in.

The SBC show at #pfw this eve "opened and closed" by @tonigarrn ✌️✌Thanks to all that came, saw and conquered.

"There may well be a supermodel or two," Bateman warned me before class over email. Equal parts Fight Club and Black Swan, SBC's Paris pop-up took place at a no...

Where to Shop for Brands Your Friends Have Never Heard of

Anna Segurado Shredded T-Shirt, £175 (about $250); at Not Just a Label/LLY Atelier Double Claw Ring, £155 (about $220); at Not Just a Label
If you feel like you’ve fallen into a fashion rut as of late, rest assured you’re not alone. According to one of the more popular theories that have been tossed around as to why the industry is “broken” right now, clothes these days are simply too boring, too homogenous, too same-old, same-old. Even with a million options of where to shop and what to buy, it’s easy for us to fall into the same retail patterns—stopping at the same stores on Saturdays to pick up a new pair of shoes or clicking on already-bookmarked sites to browse their new arrivals. I’m guilty, too—it’s a rare week that I don’t wear head-to-toe Aritzia at least once (Canadian habits die hard, kids). But without...

Chimaek, Korean Fried Chicken And Beer

150702k1-c

CNN has highlighted in its special feature on its website that Chimaek- the term used to describe the fried chicken (chi) and beer (maekju) combo - has been thriving in South Korea for years but the world is only now catching on.

It has also addressed that neither fried chicken nor beer originated in Korea.

But the union of these two overseas imports has become a culturally significant force in South Korean drinking culture.

The country is bursting with places to eat chicken.

As of 2013, South Korea had more than 20,000 fried chicken eateries. The market for fried chicken is worth about 3 trillion KRW (about $3 billion), according to Statistics Korea. There's even a festival devoted to chicken and beer...

ANNA EWERS

Jason Schmidt
Jason Schmidt
The roaring 20s. Versace dress, $6,675, and sandals, $1,695, 888-721-7219. Hair: Sally Hershberger for Sally Hershberger 24K; makeup: Porsche Cooper for Tom Ford beauty. Anna Ewers, 23, is being demographically appropriate: She's on the phone while playing ping-pong in Brooklyn's Williamsburg, the spiritual home of 23-year-old models. "I'm playing ping-pong for my workout," she says jokingly. The German-born model adds, very Germanically, "I was playing yesterday for two hours. And today I'm playing for another two hours!" It's actually some rare time spent at home for Ewers, who in the first three weeks of the year has already logged work trips to Mexico, Barbados, and Los Angeles. Ewers's moment, launched by Alexander Wang in his Spring 2014 show, has...
