Pat McGrath’s New ‘Unlimited’ Makeup Collection Is Fall’s First Mandatory Beauty Binge

pat-mcgrath-first-collection-color-cosmetics-vogue-september-2017
After more than two years of maintaining statecraft levels of secrecy, Pat McGrathsteps into a glass conference room in her Manhattan studio and snaps the curtains closed, fussing over the gossamer fabric to make sure her staff can’t peek inside. “No one has seen this yet,” she says giddily, unloading a series of tubes and compacts from a bejeweled Prada sac—a gift from Miuccia—onto two velvet-lined trays. It is an early morning in late May, a few days before the influential makeup artist will accept the Founder’s Award at the CFDA Awards, and a few weeks before she will fly to Paris to create a holographic crimson lip for Maison Margiela, a highlight of the fall couture calendar. Today’s reveal marks another milestone...

‘Desus & Mero’ Provide a Complete History Of Makeup Artist Jeffree Star’s Hateful Rhetoric

landscape-1502905028-elle-jeffree-stars-racist-mixtape
Last night on Viceland's Desus & MeroDesus & Mero, the late-night news duo turned their attention to makeup artist slash vlogger, "Jeffree Racist Star," who slammed Kim Kardashian West's swatch skills and quickly faced the wrath of Twitter commenters who implicated Star's well-documented racist comments in years-old videos. Kardashian West quickly jumped to Star's defense on Snapchat, saying, "I do believe in people changing and people that apologize, I will give them the benefit of the doubt and accept you know, that people change and move on. And I know better than anyone that I hate when people bring up my past or mistakes I've made in the past. So let him live." Kardashian West's justification of Star's hateful past didn't sit well with her followers,...

The Politics of a Woman’s Body Hair in the Workplace

GETTYSTOCKBYTE

How much better at my job would I be if I didn't have to add "figuring out what to do about my body hair" to the list of things required for me to do it?

The night before what was indisputably going to be the biggest day of my professional career, I should have been up late prepping interview questions, packing extra batteries for my recorder, or even catching a few extra hours of sleep. Instead, I was staring at the thick, black hair on my legs in frustration.

As a freelancer who mostly works from home, I don't often have to worry about the tendrils of hair that grow, visibly, down my legs. But I was going to be reporting...

She’s Like A Rainbow

landscape-1502766269-elle-shes-like-a-rainbow
I got slammed for not wearing makeup for my wedding. "Trust me, you'll want to, like, even things out for photos," said one friend a few weeks before the big day, her eyes darting to the archipelago of faded blemishes on my cheek. "You're not gonna wear any foundation?" another asked anxiously. (I did end up going barefaced—but with smudgy eyeliner and my lips dabbed with Lip Smacker Dr. Pepper Lip Balm, the most fresh-to-death hint of color in all the land.) Turns out going sans foundation when your skin is less than perfect is puzzling to girlfriends and maybe even regarded as a bit like airing one's dirty laundry in public. Yet the stir my almost au naturel look caused is nothing compared to...

10 Things You Need to Know Before Exfoliating Your Face

GETTY

Behold: the answers to all of your exfoliation questions.

GETTY
GETTY
If you have sensitive skin, you probably stay away from scrubs because you don't want your skin to be a red, raw-looking mess. And if you're acne-prone, a peel definitely seems insane because breakouts, right? Wrong. Turns out exfoliationcan benefit every skin type. Here's why: "In addition to revealing fresh skin cells, exfoliating removes dead cells from pores, making them appear smaller," says Rachel Nazarian, M.D., a Manhattan derm. Makeup also looks better, says Stalina Glot, an aesthetician at Haven Spa in New York City. "It's like sanding a wall before you paint." The other major perk: "Removing the buildup enhances your skin's ability to absorb everything else, from acne...
