6 Things To Know About McQueen’s Return-To-London Show

landscape-1456157288-elle-mcqueen-index

Alexander McQueen had a homecoming Sunday night, when the label returned to its London birthplace for its fall 2016 show. Fashion fans camped outside. #McQueen hashtags began to trend. Models queued backstage for their 7 p.m. entrance. And we began to keep a style score on—and off—the catwalk.

1. UNICORNS ARE REAL

At least, they are on the runway: designer Sarah Burton embroidered two lace evening gowns with giant sequin unicorns, while smaller versions dotted the evening coat that Natalie Westling wore to open the show.

2. SAFETY PINS ARE THE NEW HEADBANDS

The 12 Best Fall Trends from New York Fashion Week

nyfw-trends-report-primary
As always, the end of New York Fashion Week brings with it the inevitable forecasting of next year’s biggest trends, and while it’s still too early to tell which styles the masses will take to, there was a handful of strong recurring looks that emerged with a vengeance from the high-fashion Fall 2016 runways. While a few trends are holdovers from this past fall (statement fur, thoughtful layering), others definitely feel shiny and new (neck adornments, excessive ruffles). Overall though, the biggest trend appeared to be not really paying attention to the season at all. Blame it on the exceptionally warm weather most of the U.S. faced this winter, but nearly every designer presented fall collections that felt springlike in nature—slinky slip dresses, billowy off-the-shoulder tops, florals, and strapless tops. And...

2. Mulberry’s Re-Birth Burberry is also making a comeback on the London Fashion Week schedule. The brand that launched many must-have bags has a new creative director at the helm, Johnny Coca. It’s...

Fall 2016 Trend

IMAXTREE

We're keeping an eye on the emerging micro-trends on the runway under the die-hard rule of: when you see three, call it.

MERCURY RISING
Spring's palettes were like a gateway drug to all things shiny for fall. The metal currently taking center stage is mercury. Adam Selman layered a silvery tank under sheer black, Monse put theirs on a standout parka and Cushnie et Ochs went full metal on a sultry cocktail dress. The results are looks that appear that they could liquify at your feet—and are just a little bit dangerous.

In collaboration with the Make-a-Wish Foundation and stylist Mary Alice Stephenson'sGlam4Good, Naeem Khan invited 11 year-old Trinity Faith Moran to be the guest of honor at his Fall 2016 runway presentation, the NY Daily News reports. Trinity, who is battling stage 3 Rhabdomyosarcoma, arrived in New York for the first time yesterday, paying the designer a visit in his showroom, where she made tweaks to a custom gown he designed for her using the same fabrics and motifs featured in his Fall 2016 collection. After having her makeup done backstage and taking pre-show photos, Trinity had a chat with Hunger Games actress Willow Shields before taking her front row seat. Khan walked out to a round of applause after his 49-look collection of scarlet, black, gold and...

This Is The Uniform Serves Up Socially Aware Fast Fashion @ NYFW

1

London-based designer Jenna Young of This Is The Uniform delivers a socially conscious and super-slick FW16 collection for NYFW at MADE's Milk Studios show. The label takes the concept of fast fashion and applies it literally to its designs — putting a spotlight on consumption, wastefulness and ignorance.

"The collection is called 'No Frills' and it is based on the birth of the own brand supermarket ranges that happened in the 90s," explains Jenna. "These types of products signified a shift in the way that we shopped and consumed, and this was fast food, but fast food led to fast fashion. I'm interested in the way that people consume and buy, the way that they want and need, and the...

8 Things to Know About Coach 1941’s Fall 2016 Show

holding-update-8-things-coach

Stuart Vevers presented his Fall 2016 show for Coach 1941during New York Fashion Week today. The collection played off of themes Vevers has been establishing since taking over the house in 2013, chief among them a youthful Americana, adding Western flourishes and a slight mod edge to what we’ve come to expect from him at Coach. Other takeaways? The starry front row and the gigantic ice sculpture T. rex outside. Yes, really.

Read on for eight talking points from the show while you wait for Chioma Nnadi’s review.

The Cropped Peacoat

landscape-1455561355-hbz-3-is-a-trend-cropped-peacoat

There's no arguing the power of a great classic—and the peacoat in particular is certain to show up on any top ten lists of items all women should own. And now designers are taking it cropped. Tommy Hilfiger, Frame Denim and Tibi all opted for never-fail navy with nautical buttons—all the better to show off your flares or midi skirt.
