Why You Should Be Using Mascara On Your Brows

Question: How do I get the most natural-looking effect when filling in my brows? Answer: Backstage at the Fall 2016 shows, makeup artists took a small step toward lightening their kit load by turning mascara into a multi-tasker and using it on both lashes and brows. At Ralph Lauren (above), Tom Pecheux brushed brown mascara through brow hairs to make them fuller, telling editors, "You're really faking it when you use a powder or pencil because you are painting it on the skin. With the mascara, it's just on the hair, so it gives it a more natural, 3-D look." James Kaliardos amped up the drama at Rodarte, where he used black mascara on all the models, regardless of what color their brows were. "We're going...

Meet The Teen Makeup Artist Touring With Selena Gomez

Lottie Tomlinson has been around the world, held a demanding 24/7 job, and spent more time clutching a blow dryer than the entire cast of The Hills. The catch: She's only 17 years old. "If you know what you're meant to do," she says, "just find a way to do it. Don't be 'too good' for a job, or get nervous that the schedule's really intense. If it's experience and you need experience...

Pat McGrath’s Advice for False Eyelashes

1

New York Fashion Week has been a whirlwind of clumpy eyelashes,"dirty" manicures, flower crowns, and "don't mess with me" looks. Here are the final set of useful backstage beauty lessons from the week, including some false-eyelash advice from the one and only Pat McGrath. Find out what orange-red lipstick was used at the Proenza Schouler show, how to get a true black goth lipstick à la Rihanna and Marc Jacobs, and how Freja Beha Erichsen gets her hair styled backstage.

1. Black eyeliner is the new black lipstick. If you want lip color as dark as your mood, use a lip liner. At Fenty x Puma, Pat McGrath and her team used the lip pencil and eye gloss...

The Glitter Hair Phenomenon Takes Off on Instagram

23444
When model Mari Agory walked down the Marc Jacobs runway last night, a decadent wave of black glitter painted across her forehead, it brought a sense of directional gravitas to the whimsical hair trend we’d seen floating across our Instagram feeds of late: handfuls of glitter, applied liberally along your part. Think of it as a shimmering hair embellishment that doubles as a cheeky cover-up for visible roots: See J-Pop singer Miliyah Kato, who poured holographic stars on top of her pink locks to create a playful snow-like effect. Others went for shimmering clouds of silver dust, raking it through like gel, or carrying their confetti out toward the ends for a touch of glitz. With that sartorial boost coming from Jacobs’s...

It doesn't really matter if you're a girly girl, or a fashion girl, or if you prefer an edgier look: Deep down I think we all secretly love a bit of the sparkly stuff. Maybe it's because it appeals to our inner magpie—or to get all philosophical, our inner child—or maybe it's just because glitter is equal parts mesmerizing and badass—all at the same time. Regardless of why we like it though, one thing is clear: We're only halfway through New York Fashion Week and glitter is already showing itself as a major, major makeup trend.

With the fall 2016 London shows in full swing, a handful of breakout beauty trends are beginning to gain momentum—but perhaps none more so than the scene-stealing, aphotic effect of a dark lip. Whether onyx, bordeaux-stained, or graphic magenta, cool-toned lips are dominating the runways this season. In New York, matte, jet-black pigment marked the avant-garde urban aesthetic at Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma, whileMarc Jacobs chose obsidian pouts for a surge of gothic glamour. At Rodarte, lips were painted a no-shine merlot that provided a worthy counterpoint for models’s bold, full brows. Now,...

2 Fresh Takes on the Hair Scarf—Straight From the London Runways

head-scarves
Call it the Cara Delevingne effect. This morning in London both Preen and Mary Katrantzou sent out their Fall 2016 collections of printed dresses and graphic jackets topped by the It Brit’s favorite hair accessory: the everyday hair scarf. ForPreen’s Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi, thick black sculptural fabrics were tied around the neck and wrapped around the crown over a fuzzy bed-rumpled texture. Paired with Val Garland’s smoldering, full rimming of black eyeliner, the black cloths were a simple and playful solution to leaning into slept in hair and makeup. For Katrantzou, a delicate square piece of silk served to fully cover slick, center parted lengths, a look one would imagine would be just as practical for protecting your blowout...

What Really Went Into Those Glittering Finger Waves on the Marc Jacobs Runway

Photo: Indigital.tv
“It’s all about the silhouette,” Guido Palau said backstage atMarc Jacobs tonight, where the hairstylist was busy fashioning dual-textured finger waves into models like Lexi Boling and Natalie Westling’s long locks. What was sleek and center-parted on top (thanks to a slick of Redken’s Hardwear 16 Super-Strong Gel and some impressive comb-work) was dry and frothy through the lengths, creating a small and tight dichotomy to all of Jacobs’s oversized runway designs. Still, it was the sparkling, glossy ridges spotted on short-haired girls like Mari Agory that warranted an actual double take. Both models showed up to the Park Avenue Armory with buzz cuts, prompting Palau to dream up a hand-drawn trompe l’oeil variation of that runway hair—with a twist. “[Women]...

When we think of gorgeous brunettes, Lucy Hale and her dark textured mane are always on our list. That said, she's experimented a lot with her strands and has dabbled in a variety of deep shades, from espresso to milk chocolate. She's even added pink to the ends of her tresses for her role on Pretty Little Liars. But her recent coif change had us a little surprised — she's transformed into a blonde! Lucy called upon the talented Kristin Ess (the star's "current beauty icon," friend, and stylist) for the style switch. According to People, now was the perfect time for Lucy to see if blondes have more fun. She is currently on a break from...
