On an early Saturday morning on the sands of Oahu, Hawaii, a yoga class assembled around a lithe blonde named Jaysea Devoe. She was the instructor—and she was also 14 years old. "We're going to do a simple flow, just to wake up," she reassured the group, urging us to set our mats closer to her, "Set your intention. Take in the sun, the ocean. Let your thoughts go." It was day three of the Wanderlust Festival (think of it as Woodstock meets TED Conference for yogis) and this was Devoe's third year attending. Her first time was a graduation present from her dad after she completed her 200 hour five-month yoga certification program and registered with Yoga Alliance–when she was merely 12. Now, she was among the festival's esteemed instructors. Devoe made her name as the...

How To Make a Better-Looking Nail Polish At Home

landscape-1457368328-hbz-beauty-school-article
Question: How can I make my at-home manicure look more expensive and interesting?  Answer: Backstage at Emanuel Ungaro, manicurist Marian Newman mixed a magic potion that had models wishing they could keep the color for the rest of the week. Inspired by "Charlotte Rampling in a Helmut Newton photograph," she set out to create a custom polish that had the depth, intensity and dimension of velvet. She started with M.A.C. Studio Nail Lacquer in Rebel, a creamy plum, as the base, then added in black polish (the ratio was two-thirds Rebel and one-third black) and a tiny bit of loose silver shimmer pigment. "You can't see the shimmer unless you really look for it, but it just makes the color look 3D," said Newman. Sally Hansen Global Color Ambassador Madeline...

Can Black Lipstick Be Anything But Goth?

gallery-1457109248-dsc-5611
Can black lipstick be anything but goth? Dior says oui, and they're proving it with Kendall Jenner. This morning in Paris, the model revealed a severely sexy pout by makeup maestro Peter Philips. "I'm bringing out a new Rouge Dior lipstick line," he told us backstage at the Louvre palace," and one of the shades is called Poison. It's like a really extreme pigmented Rouge Dior lipstick color. It's like a deep purple tending to black, but how do we make it less gothic? We add a high gloss and a high shine so it becomes more glamorous." Philips paired the lip with "really extreme fat lashes...

Here’s Why Everyone’s Freaking Out About Face Gloss

KATHRYN WIRSING/DESIGNED BY DANA TEPPER

It's the newest way to contour and highlight.

Contouring is cool and all (if you've got the time, skills, and pile of products). But we love the most fool-proof part of the process —  highlighting — which can be done with or without all the shading and shadowing, to give an instant glow. And we're really loving the latest way to get that luminous, light-reflecting look without all the shimmer of traditional highlighters: face gloss. Face gloss is essentially what it sounds like: a clear liquid product created for your face, as opposed to your lips, where we're used to seeing it. Its goal: to give your face a highlighted look that's neither sticky nor chalky, but rather natural and dewy. Here's what one of the most buzzed-about picks, Milk Makeup Face Gloss ($20, Milkmakeup.com), looks...

TRY A NEW ACCENT
"Alternating nails are a great twist on the old-school accent nail trend," explains Poole, who chose to switch between pink and red. "It's one of my favorite color combinations, and since the tones of these colors are so similar, it's a subtle way of wearing nail art." Wear the look with two slightly different lipstick colors—one on each lip—for something subtly striking.
