Fight frizz like a warrior princess, or a model, would: Brush gelled hair back into a high ponytail, wrap a section around the base of the elastic (then keep going down an inch or two) and trim the ends to a blunt, even line.

Doutzen Kroes
Skip your morning shampoo-and-blowout routine on extra-hot mornings and just hit the roots with texture spray, tease a bit and pull the front sections loosely back.

Study Says Women Who Wear Makeup Get Paid More Than Those Who Don’t

Hispanic woman applying mascara in mirror
Is anyone else bothered by this? Okay, good. There have been many studies done to learn just how far being attractive can get you in this world, but new research called Gender and the returns to attractivenesswww by Jaclyn S. Wong and Andrew M. Penner asserts that it’s not just being attractive that gets one paid more, it’s how much time they spend on their looks as well. The sociologists learned that attractive people typically get paid 20 percent more in the workplace than their peers who are considered of average looks. Wong and Penner delves deeper in to what it actually means to be attractive, and they found that it has more to do with grooming habits than natural beauty. Hmph. If...

This Mohawk French Braid Is Perfect For The Gym

mohawk-french-braid-fb-1
This remix on a classic braid is perfect for HIIT day.   This article originally appeared in the June 2016 issue of SELF. Want a high-impact look with serious staying power? Try a down-the-middle braid that will keep you looking (and feeling!) cool. This update on the classic French braid comes with a major hook—it’s great during and after a workout. Here’s the blow-by-blow: Step 1: Comb damp hair into a narrow triangle at the center of your hairline. Step 2: Create a tight French braid within the triangle, gradually expanding the plait’s width as you move back. When you reach the crown of your head, bring the remaining hair from the front into the mix. Step 3: Using a loose grip, continue braiding the thicker...

I Tried The Bubble Masks That Instagram Is Freaking Out Over To See If They’re Worth The Hype

milky-piggy-carbonated-clay-mask_2

Spoiler alert: The results were effervescent.

As a beauty editor, it’s my job to try new beauty products—and look totally crazy in the process. Obviously, I got over my fear of public embarrassment years ago. My latest assignment: Try out the new bubble face mask craze, and document every fizzy moment. I first spotted bubble masks on Instagram (where all obscure and weird beauty products get famous). Women all over the world are posting selfie shots completely covered in foam. Which looks pretty cool, but are these fizzy skin products just for show or do they actually work? It’s well known that Korean women are dedicated to having flawless skin (honestly, a 10-step routine is the norm), so often the most innovative products...

Can You Use Lipstick In Place Of Concealer And Color Correctors?

landscape-1464018935-hbz-beauty-school
Question: Does using nude lipstick as concealer, and peach or red as a color corrector, really work? Answer: If you've ever fallen down the rabbit hole that is the explore page on Instagram or gotten hypnotized into watching hours of beauty vlogs when all you needed was to double-check one step of a fishtail braid, then you've almost certainly seen lipstick being used in a hundred ways other than the intended one. But the makeup artists we asked aren't sold. The main issue is the formula of lipstick: "It's too waxy and greasy," says Nick Barose. "For the average woman, it will be a disaster to blend and layer and if you use it under the eyes, it will crease and smudge. These tips only work on...

What To Know If You’re Going Golden Copper

landscape-1463770236-hbz-red-hair-00-index
Colorist Joel Warren of Warren-Tricomi calls it "golden copper;" Lucille Javier at Sally Hershberger describes it as "vibrant strawberry red;" we call it the prettiest shade to keep popping up on the red carpet and tempting us to step out of our color comfort zone. How do you make sure your stylist understands what you want? Lucille Javier: I think it's important to bring visuals to your colorist. I love when my clients bring in pictures of two different reds—one they love, and another they absolutely don't like. I believe 80% of the time a client leaves unhappy, it's because of the consultation. Everyone has different lenses on and what is beautiful to one eye may not be to another. How hard is this color to maintain? Joel...

Dr. Jart’s Water Drop Moisturizer Is Weirdly Fun To Use

dr-jart-water-drop-moisturizer-review1
The scenario: It’s Saturday night, you’re kind of dressed up, and you take your makeup bag into the bathroom. You dispense a pump of foundation onto your BeautyBlender and start applying, only to realize—what the fuck?—your face is suddenly a palette of white flakes, and your makeup is just chilling on top, refusing to fulfill its glowy, dewy promises. Welcome, friends, to my life. As someone with epically dry skin and someone who’s pro-foundation, I’m often faced with dry patches that even the most emulsifying moisturizer can’t fix. I’ve tried everything—from the $265-an-ounce stuff and the bottle of cold-pressed avocado oil in my kitchen to off-label uses of eczema cream—and nothing’s eradicated my dryness consistently. So when I heard skin-care brand...
