If there’s anything we know about Rihanna’s style, it’s that we can hardly describe it as casual. The original bad gal is known to shut down the red carpet with her voluminous and colorful ballgowns (and she doesn’t shy away from wearing those off carpet either). We’ve also witnessed how she’s the first to sport any type of extravagant footwear (she appeared in the infamous Saint Laurent disco and yeti boots right after they debuted on the runway). On top of that, even when she’s sporting a simple sweatsuit, the star is still known to dress it up with a pair of heels (and a statement bag or two). So, we were not surprised when she chose one of the most over-the-top accessories from Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring 2018runway, the oversized rhinestoned sunglasses shaped in the brand’s initials, for a “casual” Instagram post.
How does the star get away with looks that, if worn by any one else, would seem absolutely O.T.T.? A deep read of the Fenty x Puma designer’s Instagram reveals part of her secret: Rihanna labeled the other post including the aforementioned sunglasses with “subtle,” acknowledging that it’s anything but; when she sported a gigantic Molly Goddard ballgown with sneakers, her chosen tagline was “casual”; and right after she won the Met Gala (once again), she used the same phrase. If there’s a clue to be drawn from these taglines, it would be that the best accessory to an Over-The-Top ensemble is a couldn’t-care-less attitude. When the star stepped onto the Cannes red carpet for the Okja premiere, she wrote, “when you show up uninvited,” fully knowing that she was going to be the one to shut it down. It seems that Rihanna has mastered her version of a little je ne sais quoi.
