With Lady Gaga, the music always comes first. The pop provocateur may wear one outlandish piece after another, but more often than not, the wild looks tie back to the project she’s promoting or preparing. And that makes her latest ensembles all the more intriguing. She took a break from filming A Star Is Bornwith Bradley Cooper to spend Mother’s Day with her family in New York over the weekend, and has pulled out a series of dramatic twists on the urban cowgirl style she flaunted during her Joanne press tour during her stay in the city.
Gone are the ubiquitous pink hat and pastel duds; in their place are vivid colors, wild prints, and oversize movie star shades. Stepping out on Sunday in an orange sweater and burgundy striped pants from Phillip Lim’s Pre-Fall collection, Gaga played with an unexpected color pairing accented by a Swarovski crystal–covered Erickson Beamon choker and a gray topper from Gladys Tamez Millinery. Worn with triangular Roberto Cavalli sunglasses and her trademark attitude, the combination was arresting.
Of course, Gaga loves nothing more than an outfit change, and her second that day was a continuation of the Joanne aesthetic. She kept the wide-brim hat but changed into a Marcelo Burlon rose appliqué sweatshirt and a sleek Wesley Harriott pinafore dress, which she wore as a skirt, renewing her commitment to featuring young talent. Piling on the statement accessories, she donned a pair of masklike Gucci shades, a coordinating bamboo top handle, and Sergio Rossi booties covered in grommets.
These two thrilling looks could be just another Gaga fashion moment, or they could lend clues to her next phase. With fans still eager for more new material after she dropped “The Cure,” her latest single, at Coachella in April, some have speculated that her clothes could be the first glimpses of a new era. If yesterday’s look is anything to go by, then whatever Gaga has in the pipeline is sure to be wild. She took out a Gabriela Hearst cashmere-lined coat and matching leopard-spotted pants, delivering a head-to-toe animal-print fashion statement as she signed autographs outside her apartment building. It was a refreshing change of pace and served as a porthole into what could be the next chapter in Gaga’s evolution.
