Festival season is upon us, and while Coachella-inspired looks have been dominating social media, black hairstyles for festivals are few and far between. And while I’d love to just leave my 4c curls to blow free and wild in the wind, I cringe thinking about the breakage and the tangle nightmare I’d had to deal with afterwards.
So what’s a girl to do? Beauty vlogger Naptural85 (aka Whitney) has the solution, with an easy protective style for all the baddies out there. It’s the perfect combination of a funky festival look, combined with all the benefits that come with protective styling. Your hair stays moisturized and healthy, while you’re free to be your most expressive self – what’s not to love?
To execute the look, all you need is basic hair care products (a leave-in conditioner and a heavier cream), curly hair extensions, a scarf, and some braiding skills. She even offers multiple looks for the exact same hairstyle, so you’re free to change up your do’ in between days with no breakage. Hello dream hair.
Whitney starts on stretched hair, which she moisturizes as she goes along, creating parts in the front of her head to make a row of small cornrows, which she braids forwards to create a bang. She uses perm rod curlers to add a bit of a curl to the ends of each cornrow. For the back part, she divides the hair into two large sections, which she also braids into two forward-facing cornrows. She puts the loose ends of the cornrows into the bun, and lets it set overnight. The next day, (after sleeping in a silk scarf and bonnet) she takes down the perm rods, adds two wefts of brushed-out extensions to the bun, creating a curly waterfall atop her crown.
It’s a look she also modeled with a headwrap, for those who might be looking for extra protection and to keep the humidity from doing a number on their curls.
