‘Bare Butt Jeans’ Are a Thing, and We Don’t Know How to Feel

Just when it seemed like 2017’s denim trends couldn’t get any more out of control (looking at you, “clear knee” jeans), Vetements introduced the craziest new look yet: bare butt jeans. In case you were wondering, it is exactly what it sounds like — jeans that show off your butt or whatever cute underwear you have on underneath.

On Wednesday, the French fashion brand shared a sneak peek at its upcoming Vetements x Levis collaboration by way of an Instagram picture of the questionable-looking denim pants. From the photo, it looks like there are zippers down the backs of the jeans’s legs, as well as one smack-dab on the back-center seam, which leaves the wearer with a bare booty and a nice breeze when it’s opened.

They may not be the most comfortable pair of jeans on the market, but this booty-highlighting look could certainly be considered the most innovative. Even though the pants aren’t exactly ideal for wearing to class or sitting on the subway, the jeans certainly do make a major statement. Plus, worrying about splitting your pants will be a thing of the past.

VETEMENTS(@vetements_official)님의 공유 게시물님,

Vetements is known for its out-there designs, after all, including the $700 sweatpants Justin Bieber may or may not have peed in last month. The brand is a favorite among celebs like Kendall Jenner and Rihanna — both of whom would probably wear these derrière-bearing bottoms and make them look really, really cool.

Though some Instagram commenters feel that “fashion has gone too far” with the “bare butt jeans,” the response to the picture is surprisingly more positive than you might expect, with a lot responses declaring “WANT” or “NEED.” Could this be a sign that people are starting to accept these wild jeans trends as the norm? A year from now, will jeans with covered-up butts and knees be out of style? We’ll get out the scissors for a preemptive denim DIY, just in case.
