Model, businesswoman, and new mum Tyra Banks says the benefits of keeping a tidy home go well beyond aesthetics—it’s a way to stay calm and in control, despite her chaotic routine. “Being a new working mother, my mornings are now hectic,” she told Architectural Digest during a preview of her enviable new closet. “Everything has a place and purpose, which goes a long way in helping to start my day off on a good foot.”
Banks created the boutique-like space with the help of Lisa Adams, CEO of L.A. Closet Design. The modern, light-drenched room is a Pinterest-lover’s dream, featuring an entire wall dedicated to shoes and plush accents such as a black shearling-topped stool by Kelly Wearstler.
The first step in the process was to edit Banks’s extensive collection of clothing and shoes, says Adams. “My clients are encouraged to purge before I take inventory of their wardrobe. Keep what you really love; donate and part ways with all else.”
“Instinctively, people feel like the closet should be in keeping with the rest of their home, but then they realise, This is my space and I can do what I want with it,” Adams explains. She chose to decorate the space with bursts of yellow, the signature color of Banks’s makeup brand, Tyra Beauty.
Banks’s closet adheres to a strict code, so that “there’s a rhythm,” says Adams. Shoes are neatly spaced out with one heel facing forward, while clothing is arranged by type and colour. Key accessories are presented in glass top draws so everything is visible. “When I’m choosing jewellery, it feels like I’m shopping. It’s such a delight!” says Banks.
