7 Things We Learned From Lean In’s Study on Women in the Workplace

reese-salomon-hudson
photo : www.garancedore.fr Today, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and McKinsey & Company released their Women in the Workplace study, which analyzed the state of women in corporate positions in the United States. The study, which polled 118 companies and almost 30,000 employees, shed light on inequality in the workforce. Of all sectors, the study found that the greatest gender disparity occurs in the highest level of management (C-suite positions). As Sandberg wrote in today’s Wall Street Journal, “If NASA launched a person into space today, she could soar past Mars, travel all the way to Pluto, and return to Earth 10 times before women occupy half of C-suite offices.” Here, seven other key findings from the Women in the...

Margiela Did Crazy Beauty, Again

30-margiela-beauty.w1600.h1064
The beauty look at Margiela. Realistic runway beauty is great and everything, but sometimes you want to see the kind of fantastical runway beauty looks that resemble visual Mad Libs. Take the beauty at this season's Maison Margiela show, as created by Pat McGrath and her team. A seeming mishmash of glam-rock eyes and nest-y hair with a hint of geisha, the look won't be arriving on a red carpet near you anytime soon, but it is eccentrically beautiful. Take a close look at the eyes. Each model was given an individual look of metallic azure, sky blue, or silver. Some eyes were edged in swoop-y circles like Céline last season, while others were given jagged, Ziggy Stardust–inspired star prongs.   https://instagram.com/p/8P_cq0Fsii/?taken-by=patmcgrathreal   Still others were...

Rosie Huntington Whiteley backs Breast Cancer Awareness with new line for M&S

RosieBreastCancer-2-large
To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, British model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has boosted her lingerie collaboration with Marks & Spencer by creating a 19-piece collection in aid of Breast Cancer Now. The range, which features sleepwear and matching lingerie sets, also includes a super-soft post-surgery bra – the first in the model’s Rosie for Autograph inventory since collaborating with the high street giant three years ago. Fittingly, the charitable collection (10 per cent of sales will go to Breast Cancer Now) is modelled by six women who have battled breast cancer and one young woman who lost her mother to the illness. Devon-born Rosie was heavily involved behind the scenes on the campaign shoot, assisting her friend and photographer, Amanda de Cadenet. “It...

Kim Kardashian Makes Me Feel Good About My Pregnant Body

landscape-1443639812-elle-kimkpregnancy
Her self-confidence is inspiring.  GETTY The changes that my body has undergone during pregnancy have elicited less a celebration than a gradual reckoning with a loss of control. Not pregnant, I'm a five-mile-a-day runner, a swimmer, a vinyasa-doer, but during the early months of both my pregnancies (this is my second), morning sickness knocked me flat—preventing much more than an occasional shuffle around the neighborhood. When I began to feel more myself, I had to reckon with what three months of relative inactivity had done to my stamina and what an inflated abdomen had done to my ability. It was—and is—a struggle to accept the circumscribing of your conception of yourself. Not just that you can't run comfortably, but that you can't quite cross...

11 Actually Pretty Shocking Things Friends Couldn’t Get Away With Today

1443456162-friends
Love it or hate it, there's no denying that EVERYBODY of a certain generation has probably seen an episode of Friends in their time - which makes the obvious sexism, homophobia and all round lack of diversity all the more interesting 20 years later. 1. Chandler's transgender father is mislabeled and the butt of jokes Chandler's transgender father is often referred to as her birth name 'Charles' rather than her new name 'Helena Handbasket'. Incorrect labels are used when the cast are talking about her, lots of jokes are made about her gender and whether she has a penis, and there is definitely a bigger issue throughout the sitcom with transphobia. 2. Ross doesn't like Ben playing with stereotypical 'girl's toys' "Why is my...

At Versace, Come-As-You-Are Hair

landscape-1443474974-elle-mfw-ss16-beauty-versace-index
Do less.  IMAXTREE Backstage at Alexander Wang's spring show a few weeks ago, lead hairstylist Guido gave the models guerrilla haircuts—micro-bangs, bowls, brow slashes—to emphasize the idea of "individual beauty." The antithesis of James Pecis's wig-wearing Joan Jett-lookalikes at Baja East, Guido's wildly varied Wang gang was comprised of real girl-inspired women. @JoanSmalls, @GigiHadid and @TrentiniReal at the #Versace SS16 backstage. Versace(@versace_official)님이 게시한 사진님, 2015 9월 29 오전 8:04 PDT He took the idea one step further last weekend in Milan at Versace. What's realer than a stampede of girls with freshly shorn hair? Girls with air-dried texture. "Donatella just wanted me to enhance the hair, not change it, so it's got kind of a glamorous, rock and roll feeling," Guido said. "I let the hair dry naturally so it has that beautiful texture."...
