More Than Just Jane: The Women Who’ve Inspired Iconic Handbags

cometrend image size
Today, the Internet spilleth over with stories about Jane Birkin’s request that Hermès stop using her name on crocodile Birkin bags. In the flurry of articles, actual specifics of Birkin’s plea may have been missed: Birkin was presented a video by PETA that showed unethical practices being used on a crocodile farm in Texas, to which she asked the house to suspend using her name on croc Birkins until the issue was resolved. For its part, Hermès responded swiftly, noting, “Hermès specifies that this farm does not belong to them and that the crocodile skins supplied are not for the fabrication of Birkin bags,” and that an investigation of the farm in question is under way. Perhaps the more interesting issue...

landscape-1438111862-capture-decran-2015-07-28-a-033036-pm
The difference between East and West Germany is especially interesting. Cut's global beauty tour has moved from Italy to Germany in its latest 100 Years of Beauty installment. Model Brooke shows a century of hair and makeup trends in just a minute—and it gets particularly interesting post-World War II. The then-split East and West Germany had very different aesthetics before the Berlin Wall came down in 1990. Watch the full evolution: https://youtu.be/MEdEVJ_HQFU BY ALYSSA BAILEY Source: http://www.elle.com/beauty/makeup-skin-care/news/a29536/100-years-of-beauty-in-germany/...

REPORT: Alexander Wang is Leaving Balenciaga

landscape-1435949735-elle-alexander-wang-index
The designer joined the label in 2012. Alexander Wang is set to leave his post as creative director of Balenciaga, WWD reports. After hiring the young designer to replace Nicolas Ghesquière in December 2012, the French label's parent company, Kering, has decided not to renew his contract. According to the report, the spring/summer 2016 collection shown at Paris Fashion Week in October will be Wang's last. Kering's search for a successor is apparently only in "the early stages," and insiders guess that the company might opt for a more unknown talent. Meanwhile, we can only assume that Wang will continue to focus on his highly successful, eponymous line here in New York City. We have reached out to Balenciaga for comment. Summer Beauty 2015: The top trends and must-have products of the season

new-red-carpet-favourites
As we’re sure you’ve noticed, a celebrity being cast as a big label’s spokesperson usually means that said celeb will be wearing nothing but that label for the duration of their contract. For better or worse, we’re pretty much bound to seeing Jennifer Lawrence in Dior for the next few years. Same goes for Keira Knightley in Chanel. But on days when that doesn’t apply (and don’t ask us how this works), A-listers and their very coveted stylists are starting to get crafty with their wardrobe choices, opting for lesser known names when out at photo calls, press events and interviews. For those who only recently kick-started their businesses, having a celebrity wearing your designs early in the game is a...

10 Secrets To Mastering Kim Kardashian’s Makeup

landscape-1438112521-landscape-1438026991-hbz-kim-k-index
Over the course of his Master Class this past weekend, makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic took Kim Kardashian from #IWokeUpLikeThis to #ThisTakesFourHours (literally) and shared his best tips, tricks, and product recommendations each step of the way. We took pages of notes; now we need to find the time to practice. 1) Makeup first, hair second. "When clients get their hair done first, there's usually hairspray on the face, so I always start with a makeup wipe," said Dedivanovic as he prepped Kardashian's skin for the makeup tutorial (she had her hair in her signature slick and low ponytail). Plus, if you're getting a big, bouncy blowout, you won't want to pin it back for the duration of the makeup application and risk creasing. 2) Swap primer for emollient moisturizer. Dedivanovic recommends applying a...
